What ox402-utils MCP server does

The ox402-utils MCP server gives AI agents access to hosted utilities that are typically unavailable inside an agent sandbox. Its catalog contains 94 tools spanning web research, document and media conversion, speech, security reconnaissance, finance, world data, developer utilities, and AI text operations.

Research tools include search, web scraping, HTML-to-Markdown conversion, structured extraction, citation support, fact checking, and archived-page access. How it works

Connect an MCP client to the server's /mcp402/ endpoint. A tools/list request is free and returns the available tool menu, while detailed schemas are provided when needed. Calling a paid tool without authorization returns payment instructions rather than the tool result.

The payment flow follows x402. The client receives a 402 response containing the exact USDC amount and recipient address, pays on Base mainnet, then repeats the request with the signed payment in the X-Payment header. Payment verification and settlement use a self-hosted facilitator. The service lists paid calls at roughly $0.001 to $0.10, with an average stated cost of $0.014.

Free-tier tools can be called up to 10 times per IP through the trial route without a wallet, account, or API key. Paid-tier tools still require an x402 USDC payment.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, obtain the current tunnel URL from the repository's api.txt; the URL rotates periodically. Add the MCP endpoint below that base URL to a compatible client:

The repository identifies Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP frameworks as supported connection targets. For local deployment, clone the repository, install requirements.txt, and run python3 x402_server.py; the example listens on port 8793. Docker instructions build the image and publish ports 8793 and 8796.

The service does not provide a persistent subscription model; paid calls use USDC on Base mainnet and require a compatible payment signer or x402 client. The free allowance applies only to eligible tier-free tools and is limited by IP. A local deployment avoids the hosted endpoint but requires the repository's Python dependencies or Docker setup.
