What NetGrant — Canadian funding does

NetGrant — Canadian funding provides MCP tools for researching Canadian funding programs through an AI client. Its catalog contains more than 1,300 opportunities, including grants, tax credits, wage subsidies, accelerators, pitch competitions, loans, and events. Records use a normalized structure with fields such as title, category, region, funding range, deadline, eligibility text, and source URL.

The service covers federal, provincial, municipal, and private sources. It is continuously ingested from more than 60 providers, with a daily audit process that rechecks listings, archives expired programs, and corrects changed details. The data is updated weekly, and stale opportunities are automatically archived. NetGrant is not affiliated with a government or funding body, so applicants should verify requirements and deadlines on the official source page.

How it works

The hosted MCP endpoint is https://mcp.netgrant.ca/mcp. It uses Streamable HTTP and does not require an account, API key, or authentication. An MCP client sends requests to the endpoint and exposes the available tools in the conversation. The same catalog is also available through the unauthenticated web app at https://app.netgrant.ca.

Search results can be narrowed by region, category, deadline window, funding range, rolling status, and whether expired opportunities should be excluded. Returned matches are ranked. A selected record can then be expanded, compared with two to four other records, or checked against a description of the applicant.

Setup and configuration

Add the endpoint as an HTTP MCP server in a client configuration. For clients using a JSON MCP configuration, the server entry needs the URL https://mcp.netgrant.ca/mcp and an HTTP type. Claude Code can add the same endpoint with its HTTP transport command. The README documents setup for Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, Continue, Claude Code, and Claude.ai custom connectors.

No environment variables, local database, API key, or self-hosted process are required. The repository is documentation only; NetGrant is a hosted, closed-source service and cannot be self-hosted from this repository.

Tools and capabilities

• search_opportunities searches the catalog using text and optional structured filters.
• get_opportunity_details retrieves a complete opportunity record by ID, including eligibility, description, amounts, deadline, and source link.
• compare_opportunities retrieves two to four opportunities for comparison.
• eligibility_check provides an opportunity’s criteria alongside an applicant description so the assistant can assess fit.
• subscribe_to_digest starts a free weekly email digest for a saved search after the user provides consent and an email address. The subscription uses double opt-in.

The service also documents /find-for-me, which matches opportunities to a short business description, and /check-deadlines, which finds opportunities closing within 30 days.

Limitations and notes

NetGrant — Canadian funding is a hosted public service rather than a package that can be installed locally. Its tools depend on the availability and accuracy of the hosted catalog and its source data. A listing is not an approval or a substitute for reading the official program requirements. Confirm eligibility, deadlines, and application details with the source organization before applying.

The weekly digest is limited to new Canadian grants matching a saved search and requires explicit consent, an email address, and double opt-in. The documented digest behavior sends a weekly selection of matching opportunities and supports one-click unsubscribe.
