We only publish a config when the install details come from the project itself — its README, its docs, or a verified owner. We haven’t found those for @microsoft/workiq, and we’d rather show nothing than a guess you’d paste into your client.

Overview

@microsoft/workiq connects AI assistants to Microsoft 365 data through natural-language queries and an MCP stdio server. It can retrieve information about emails, meetings, documents, Teams messages, and people, and also provides a standalone CLI for asking questions. Use it with GitHub Copilot CLI, VS Code, or another MCP-compatible client when workplace data needs to be available to an agent. Tenant administrator consent is required before accessing Microsoft 365 tenant data.

How Workiq works

What @microsoft/workiq does

@microsoft/workiq provides a CLI and MCP server for querying Microsoft 365 data with natural-language questions. Supported information includes email content, calendar meetings, documents, Teams messages, and people or organizational context. Example requests include finding recent presentations, summarizing messages in a Teams channel, checking upcoming meetings, or identifying who is working on a project.

The repository also distributes Work IQ plugins for GitHub Copilot CLI. Available plugins cover the main Work IQ query experience, a preview workflow, Microsoft 365 Copilot declarative-agent development, and read-only productivity insights such as email triage, meeting costs, org charts, and channel audits.

How it works

The MCP entry point runs over standard input and output. A coding agent or IDE starts the package with npx or the globally installed workiq command, then uses the exposed MCP tools to handle questions about Microsoft 365 data.

The CLI can also process questions directly with workiq ask. It supports both an interactive mode and a one-question mode using --question. Authentication uses an Entra tenant identifier; the default tenant value is common, and a specific tenant can be supplied with --tenant-id.

For GitHub Copilot CLI, the repository is added as a plugin marketplace before installing one of its plugins. Standalone MCP use instead involves registering the workiq mcp command in an MCP-capable client.

Setup and configuration

Node.js 18 or newer is required. NPM and NPX are included with Node.js, so the server can be run without a global installation:

Terminal
npx -y @microsoft/workiq mcp

Alternatively, install the package globally and start the server with:

Terminal
npm install -g @microsoft/workiq
workiq mcp

A typical MCP configuration uses npx as the command, passes -y, the @microsoft/workiq@latest package reference, and the mcp subcommand. The package supports Windows x64 and ARM64, Linux x64 and ARM64, and macOS x64 and ARM64.

GitHub Copilot CLI users can add the marketplace with /plugin marketplace add microsoft/work-iq, then install a plugin such as workiq@work-iq. VS Code provides an installation link in the project for configuring the server.

Tools and capabilities

  • Ask natural-language questions about Microsoft 365 data.
  • Search or summarize emails and Teams messages.
  • Retrieve meeting and calendar information.
  • Find documents and presentations.
  • Identify people and project-related organizational context.
  • Start an MCP stdio server for agent communication.
  • Inspect the installed package version with workiq version.

Limitations and notes

Work IQ is identified as being in public preview, so its features and APIs may change. Access to Microsoft 365 tenant data requires consent for permissions that need administrative rights. A consent dialog appears on first access; users without administrator privileges must have a tenant administrator grant consent.

The package includes a preview Work IQ plugin with different retrieval, grounding, delegation, and entity-operation behavior from the public workiq routing policy. The workiq-productivity plugin is read-only. Legal terms are provided through the repository's license and notices files.
