We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

We ran the install command but it didn't respond within our test window — this can mean a slow first-time install rather than a real problem.

npx -y @powforge/mcp-identity

No response to initialize.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 5d ago.

Overview

mcp-identity MCP server exposes three tools for working with PowForge's Depth-of-Identity Oracle and Nostr public keys. It looks up multi-dimensional DoI scores, creates unsigned vouch events, and verifies signed certificates locally with Schnorr signatures. Score lookups use the oracle's L402 payment flow, while certificate verification does not require network access. Reach for it when an agent or paid API needs identity-based scoring, vouch construction, or offline certificate checks.

Use cases

  • Score a Nostr pubkey before handling a paid API request
  • Build an unsigned vouch event for another Nostr identity
  • Verify a signed DoI certificate without network access
  • Use identity depth as a pricing or rate-limit input

Key features

  • Nostr pubkey lookup in hex or npub form
  • Multi-dimensional DoI score retrieval
  • Unsigned Nostr vouch event construction
  • Offline Schnorr certificate verification
  • L402 invoice payment and retry handling

How MCP Identity works

What mcp-identity does

The mcp-identity MCP server provides agent-accessible operations around PowForge's Depth-of-Identity (DoI) Oracle. It accepts Nostr public keys in hexadecimal or npub form for score lookup, creates unsigned Nostr events that vouch for another key's identity depth, and checks signed DoI certificates without contacting the oracle.

The score response covers multiple dimensions identified by the project: network, longevity, and kinetic-filter cost. The certificate contains a score, its dimensions, and the Bitcoin chaintip height and block hash associated with the score. This gives an application a claim tied to a specific chaintip rather than only a recomputed score.

Tools and capabilities

The server exposes three MCP tools:

  • doi_score_lookup sends a Nostr pubkey to the upstream DoI Oracle and returns its multi-dimensional score. The request is L402-priced.
  • doi_sign_vouch constructs an unsigned Nostr event that vouches for another pubkey's depth of identity. The caller is responsible for signing it; the oracle can count the vouch after observing it.
  • doi_score_verify performs offline Schnorr verification on a signed DoI certificate returned by the oracle. It does not use the network.

These operations support identity-aware controls such as using a score in pricing, rate limiting, or request routing.

How it works

For a paid score request, the wrapper communicates with oracle.powforge.dev. When the oracle returns an HTTP 402 response with a Lightning invoice, the wrapper uses the configured wallet key to pay and retries the request.

The oracle's certificate signs the score, dimensions, chaintip height, and chaintip block hash with Schnorr. Verification can therefore be performed locally against the returned certificate.

Setup and configuration

Install the package from npm:

Terminal
npm i @powforge/mcp-identity

Configure an MCP client to launch it through npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "powforge-identity": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@powforge/mcp-identity"]
    }
  }
}

Restart the client after saving the configuration. To enable the L402 payment retry for score lookups, configure LNBITS_INVOICE_KEY with the wallet value used by the wrapper. The material does not provide additional configuration variables or a separate account setup.

Limitations and notes

The server does not sign vouch events on behalf of the caller: doi_sign_vouch returns an unsigned event. Score lookup depends on the upstream oracle and its Lightning payment flow, whereas doi_score_verify is the offline path. The repository identifies the package as version 0.7.0 and licenses it under MIT. Certificate format details and the oracle's claim window are documented separately in the whitepaper.

Frequently Asked Questions about MCP Identity

mcp-identity is an MCP server that connects AI agents to the PowForge Depth-of-Identity Oracle and Nostr identity data. Its main tools look up DoI scores, build unsigned Nostr vouch events, and verify signed DoI certificates offline with Schnorr signatures. Score lookup uses L402 pricing and requires a configured Lightning wallet.

Install it with `npm i @powforge/mcp-identity`, then configure your MCP client to launch `npx -y @powforge/mcp-identity`. Restart the client so the three tools appear.

It pays through the L402 flow using the configured `LNBITS_INVOICE_KEY`. The first oracle response supplies a Lightning invoice, after which the wrapper pays and retries the request.

Yes, the README provides MCP configuration for Cursor. Add the package as a stdio server using the `npx` command and restart Cursor.

Yes, `doi_score_verify` verifies a signed DoI certificate offline with Schnorr verification and does not require a network request.
