We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

We ran the install command but it didn't respond within our test window — this can mean a slow first-time install rather than a real problem.

npx -y mathter-mcp

No response to initialize.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 5d ago.

Overview

Mathter MCP server connects an MCP-compatible assistant to Mathter for generating printable K-12 worksheet packs. It uses stdio transport and saves the returned PDF locally, usually in Downloads, with answer keys included by default. The server provides tools to inspect available skills, check account allowance, and generate packs with options such as grade, difficulty, layout, charts, and worked solutions. Reach for it when educators or families want to create Mathter worksheets from plain-English requests without opening the Mathter website.

Use cases

  • Generate grade-specific worksheet packs
  • Create printable multiplication and fraction drills
  • Check remaining monthly worksheet allowance
  • Save generated PDFs to a shared school folder

Key features

  • Natural-language worksheet generation
  • K-12 grade support
  • Answer keys by default
  • Skill discovery and allowance checks
  • Configurable PDF output directory
  • Stdio MCP transport

How Mathter works

What Mathter does

Mathter MCP server turns a natural-language worksheet request into a PDF pack generated through a user’s Mathter account. The output is saved on the local computer, normally in the Downloads folder, so it can be opened and printed. Packs include answer keys by default, while cover and lesson pages depend on the account plan.

The server is intended for the 🎓 Education category and supports kindergarten through grade 12. A request can specify a skill, grade, difficulty, title, worksheet count, number of problems per page, and whether to include answer keys. Mathter also supports options for selected fact families, blank or filled multiplication charts, timed drills, diagrams, graph grids, measurement systems, and worked solutions where the skill provides them.

How it works

Mathter MCP server runs locally as a small Node.js process using stdio transport. An MCP client starts it with npx -y mathter-mcp, and the process communicates with the assistant without requiring a hosted service or open port. Node.js 18 or newer is required.

The server uses a Mathter API key for account-backed operations. It sends that key in the authorization header for worksheet generation and does not send it to the public skills endpoint. Generated files are written to the configured output directory, and duplicate names receive a suffix rather than overwriting an earlier PDF.

Billing, monthly allowance, plan limits, and style availability come from the connected Mathter account. The MCP server does not add a separate per-call charge. Free accounts can generate packs with up to two worksheets; Standard and Premium plans provide larger limits and additional page or style options.

Setup and configuration

Create an API key from the API access area of a Mathter account, then provide it as MATHTER_API_KEY. The server refuses to start without this variable. Installation is not required beforehand because npx downloads the package when the MCP client starts it.

Optional configuration variables are:

  • MATHTER_BASE_URL: changes the Mathter service URL; it defaults to https://mathter.ca.
  • MATHTER_OUT_DIR: selects the directory for generated PDFs. The default is the Downloads folder, or the system temporary directory if Downloads is unavailable.

Claude Desktop uses an mcpServers entry with the npx command and the environment variable. Claude Code can register the same process with claude mcp add. Cursor, Windsurf, Zed, and other MCP clients use their own configuration format, but the command, arguments, and environment variable remain the same.

Tools and capabilities

Mathter MCP server exposes three tools:

  • list_skills retrieves the currently available skills and the grades that support each one. The assistant can use this before generation to avoid requesting an invalid skill.
  • check_allowance reports the account plan, remaining monthly pack allowance, and reset date without consuming allowance.
  • generate_worksheet_pack creates the PDF. skill and grade are required; grades range from 0 through 12, and most other settings have defaults.

Generation options include six named styles subject to plan restrictions, ten colour themes, worksheet count, difficulty, titles, answer keys, cover and lesson pages, reproducible seeds, and premium branding fields. The account logo is applied by Mathter when configured there.

Limitations and notes

The requested skill must be returned by list_skills and taught at the selected grade. Pack size, styles, cover pages, lesson pages, and some branding options are controlled by the Mathter plan. Mathter also rate-limits generation and public skill-list requests; generation should be attempted one pack at a time when rate-limited.

The API key is required for account operations and should be revoked if exposed. It can use the account’s worksheet allowance, but it cannot change branding, passwords, billing, or create additional keys.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mathter

Mathter is an MCP server that connects an AI assistant to a user’s Mathter account for worksheet generation. It provides list_skills, check_allowance, and generate_worksheet_pack tools, returning a printable PDF saved locally. The server uses stdio and requires a Mathter API key.

Run it through `npx -y mathter-mcp` in your MCP client configuration; no separate installation is required. Node.js 18 or newer is needed, and the `MATHTER_API_KEY` environment variable must be supplied.

Yes, Mathter works with Cursor through its MCP server configuration. Add the stdio command `npx -y mathter-mcp` and provide `MATHTER_API_KEY`; consult Cursor’s MCP documentation for the exact configuration file format.

Mathter saves PDFs in the Downloads folder by default, or in the system temporary directory if Downloads is unavailable. Set `MATHTER_OUT_DIR` to use another location, such as a shared school folder.

You can configure the skill, grade, theme, style, difficulty, title, worksheet count, problems per page, answer keys, cover and lesson pages, worked solutions, charts, timed drills, diagrams, graph grids, units, branding, and a reproducible seed. Plan limits apply.
