We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-magic-8-ball

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 5d ago.

How Magic 8 Ball works

What Magic 8 Ball MCP server does

Magic 8 Ball MCP server exposes one MCP tool, magic_8_ball_ask. The tool accepts a yes-or-no question and returns response text modeled on a mystical Magic 8 Ball answer. It is intended for random decisions, informal tie-breakers, and playful perspective.

The tool also supports two response styles. Cynical mode favors negative-weighted answers, while corporate mode produces business-jargon phrasing. These modes change the tone or weighting of the returned answer; they do not add factual analysis or external decision-making data.

How it works

The package can be used in two ways. A hosted MCP endpoint is available through the Pipeworx gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/magic-8-ball/mcp. A local package can instead communicate through standard input and output, avoiding a gateway round trip and Pipeworx account requirement.

The hosted endpoint lists the Magic 8 Ball tool along with shared Pipeworx gateway tools. Those additional tools may include routing, discovery, search, and memory operations. The local process exposes only this pack's tools. The gateway's initialize response is the authoritative source for the tools available from a particular hosted connection.

For clients or scripts that do not use MCP, the gateway also provides an HTTP tool endpoint at /v1/tools/magic_8_ball_ask. A JSON POST request can supply the question directly.

Setup and configuration

Add the hosted endpoint to an MCP client using its URL, or configure the local server with the npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-magic-8-ball command. Running the npx command directly starts the stdio server and lets a client handle MCP initialization, tool listing, and tool calls.

A direct HTTP call uses Content-Type: application/json and sends a body such as {"question":"Will this project be completed on time?"}.

Tools and capabilities

The Magic 8 Ball MCP server provides:

  • magic_8_ball_ask for yes-or-no questions.
  • Mystical response text.
  • Optional cynical responses with negative weighting.
  • Optional corporate responses using business jargon.
  • Hosted MCP, local stdio, and documented HTTP access paths.

On the gateway, ask_pipeworx can route a plain-English request to an appropriate tool, including the Magic 8 Ball tool. This routing is a gateway feature and is not part of the standalone local process.

Limitations and notes

Responses are random or playful and should not be treated as reliable predictions, recommendations, or factual answers. The tool is narrow: it handles yes-or-no prompts and returns response text rather than performing research or connecting to a project-management system.

The hosted pack endpoint includes shared gateway schemas in addition to the pack's own tool. If that extra context is undesirable, the standalone stdio package exposes only the Magic 8 Ball tools. The full Pipeworx gateway is another hosted option when direct access to the broader catalog is needed.
