Email operations include searching by sender, subject, date, or keywords; reading messages and threads; changing flags and read status; moving messages; applying categories; and handling attachments. Agents can create, update, send, delete, reply to, and forward drafts. Calendar tools cover event discovery, creation, updates, declines, cancellations, and deletion. Contacts can be searched and maintained, including searches against the organisational directory.

The server also covers folders, inbox rules, categories, Focused Inbox, automatic replies, working hours, time zone settings, and meeting-room searches. Messages and conversations can be exported in formats including Markdown, EML, JSON, CSV, MBOX, and HTML, depending on the export target.

How it works

An MCP-compatible client invokes the server's tools from an assistant conversation. The implementation groups its functionality into 22 consolidated tools rather than exposing the larger underlying operation set. The auth tool reports authentication status and supports authentication-related actions, while the remaining tools operate on the connected Outlook account.

Search supports ordinary filtering and, where available, Microsoft 365 free-text search. Delta synchronization can return new, changed, and deleted messages since a previous check by using continuation tokens. Conversation-aware operations let an agent work with complete threads instead of treating every message as unrelated.

Sending includes safeguards intended to make outbound actions reviewable. Dry-run mode can preview an operation, mail tips can report conditions such as out-of-office settings or delivery restrictions, session rate limiting limits repeated sends, and a recipient allowlist can restrict destinations.

Setup and configuration

The server requires access to a Microsoft account through Outlook. The repository states that personal Outlook.com and work or school Microsoft 365 accounts are supported, with feature differences documented by account type. Use the authentication functionality exposed by the auth tool to inspect or complete the account connection.

Shared mailbox access is optional and applies to work or school Microsoft 365 accounts. Set OUTLOOK_SHARED_MAILBOX to opt into that capability. Shared mailbox operations can enumerate folders, search and read messages, and organise them by moving, flagging, categorising, or creating folders. Sending and draft operations remain tied to the signed-in user's own mailbox.

Shared mailbox functionality is read-and-organise only: sending, drafts, replies, and forwards are not supported for that mailbox.

Folder-tree enumeration is best-effort. Results can identify branches skipped because of depth limits or errors in individual folders. Meeting-room search is unavailable for personal accounts and needs administrator-approved Microsoft 365 permissions. Export formats depend on whether the target is one message, a batch of messages, or a conversation thread.
