We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-listenbrainz

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 7d ago.

mcp-listenbrainz

ListenBrainz MCP.

Part of Pipeworx — an MCP gateway connecting AI agents to 1882+ live data sources. This is an independent, unofficial integration — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the upstream provider.

Tools

ToolDescription
top_artistsListenBrainz sitewide top artists (open music listening data, MetaBrainz/MusicBrainz-linked). Most-listened artists across all users for a time range. Keyless.
user_listensA SPECIFIC NAMED ListenBrainz user's recent listens (track scrobbles), newest first — only when the question names a username; never with a guessed or example one. Open music listening data, MusicBrainz-linked. Keyless for public profiles.
now_playingWhat a ListenBrainz user is listening to right now (the currently-playing track, if any). Open music listening data. Keyless for public profiles.
user_top_artistsA SPECIFIC NAMED ListenBrainz user's top (most-listened) artists for a time range — only when the question names a ListenBrainz username. NEVER for general questions like "recommend popular music" or "top songs 2026" (use last-fm chart_top_artists / tag_top_artists for those), and never with a guessed or example username — the result would be a stranger's personal listening history presented as an answer. Open music listening data, MusicBrainz-linked. Keyless for public profiles.

Quick Start

Add to your MCP client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.):

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "listenbrainz": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/listenbrainz/mcp"
    }
  }
}

What this endpoint actually serves

tools/list at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/listenbrainz/mcp returns the tools in the table above plus the shared Pipeworx meta-tools — ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, remember/recall and the rest of the gateway-wide set. So the tool count you see is larger than this table: a single-pack endpoint currently lists roughly 30 shared tools alongside the pack's own. The connection's initialize response states its exact scope, and is the authoritative answer for a given day.

This is deliberate, not multiplexing by accident. The meta-tools are what let a scoped connection answer a question this pack does not cover — via ask_pipeworx, which routes across the whole catalog — without you adding a second MCP server. There is currently no way to mount a pack endpoint without them; if the extra schemas cost you more context than the routing is worth, connect to the full gateway once rather than to several pack endpoints.

Or connect to the full Pipeworx gateway to get every pack's tools listed directly, instead of just this one's:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pipeworx": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Both URLs reach the same gateway and the same 1882+ data sources. The only difference is which pack's tools are listed directly; ask_pipeworx reaches all of them from either one.

No MCP client? Call it over HTTP

Terminal
curl -X POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/top_artists \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"range":"week","count":10}'

No account needed for the first calls. Inspect any tool: GET https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/top_artists. Find one: POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/search_packs with {"query":"..."}.

Standalone (no gateway account)

This package also runs as a local stdio MCP server — no Pipeworx account, no gateway round-trip:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "listenbrainz": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-listenbrainz"]
    }
  }
}

Or run it directly to confirm it starts:

Terminal
npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-listenbrainz

It speaks MCP over stdin/stdout and answers initialize/tools/list/tools/call for only this pack's tools — none of the shared meta-tools the gateway connection above adds. Same source, same tools, no ask_pipeworx routing.

Using with ask_pipeworx

Instead of calling tools directly, you can ask questions in plain English — this works on the pack endpoint above as well as on the full gateway:

Code
ask_pipeworx({ question: "your question about Listenbrainz data" })

The gateway picks the right tool and fills the arguments automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions about Listenbrainz

Listenbrainz is an MCP server that provides access to open ListenBrainz music listening data through tools for sitewide top artists, named-user recent listens, currently-playing tracks, and named-user top artists by time range. It can run through the Pipeworx gateway or locally as a stdio MCP server, with public profiles requiring no key.

The server provides top_artists, user_listens, now_playing, and user_top_artists. These tools cover sitewide artist rankings, a named user’s recent listens, a named user’s current track, and a named user’s top artists for a selected time range.

Connect an MCP client to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/listenbrainz/mcp for the gateway version, or run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-listenbrainz for a local stdio server. The gateway connection includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools, while the standalone server exposes only this pack’s tools.

Yes, use user_listens or now_playing with a specifically named ListenBrainz username. These tools are intended for public profiles and must not use guessed or example usernames; user_listens returns recent listens newest first, while now_playing returns the current track if available.

Call a tool through the Pipeworx HTTP endpoint, such as POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/top_artists with a JSON body like {"range":"week","count":10}. Tool details can be inspected with GET https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/top_artists.
