Overview

The Linear MCP server exposes selected Linear GraphQL operations as MCP tools for issue and team workflows. It can list filtered issues, retrieve issue details, create issues, list teams, and search issue text. Use the hosted Pipeworx endpoint for OAuth-backed access, or run the package locally over stdio without a Pipeworx account.

Use cases

  • Browse issues by team, state, priority, or date range
  • Search Linear issues by keyword or text
  • Retrieve full details for a known issue
  • Create a Linear issue from an agent workflow
  • List teams before selecting a Linear team

Key features

  • Filter Linear issues with native IssueFilter conditions
  • Retrieve issue descriptions, comments, labels, and URLs
  • Create issues with a title and optional description
  • Search issues by keyword or text
  • Run through Pipeworx OAuth or local stdio

How Linear works

What Linear MCP server does

The Linear MCP server gives an MCP client access to common Linear issue workflows. It connects to a Linear account through the Linear GraphQL API and exposes five pack-specific tools:

  • linear_list_issues retrieves issues using Linear issue filters.
  • linear_get_issue returns detailed information for a specified issue.
  • linear_create_issue creates an issue with a title and optional description.
  • linear_list_teams returns the teams in the connected workspace.
  • linear_search finds issues by keyword or text.

Issue results can include identifiers, titles, states, priorities, assignees, and URLs. Detailed issue results also include descriptions, labels, comments, and other issue metadata. The listing tool supports filters for teams, date ranges, states, priorities, assignees, projects, cycles, and labels, including combined filter conditions supported by Linear's IssueFilter.

How it works

The Linear MCP server is available in two deployment forms. The hosted option uses the Pipeworx gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/linear/mcp. A connected Linear account and a Pipeworx key are required when calling the gateway directly. The gateway endpoint lists the Linear tools together with shared Pipeworx meta-tools, while the full gateway exposes all available packs directly.

The local option runs the @pipeworx/mcp-linear package with npx. It communicates over standard input and output and exposes only the five Linear tools listed above. This mode does not require a Pipeworx account or a gateway request.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted MCP connection, add the gateway URL to an MCP client's server configuration. The README names Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf as client examples. To use direct HTTP calls instead, authenticate with a Pipeworx bearer key and send requests to the gateway's tool endpoint.

For local use, configure the client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-linear, or execute that command directly to verify that the server starts. No environment variables are documented as required for the local package. The hosted setup instead relies on a connected Linear account and Pipeworx authentication.

Tools and capabilities

linear_list_issues is suited to workspace browsing and supports Linear's native issue-filter structure. It can filter by one or more supported issue attributes and returns results newest-updated first.

linear_get_issue accepts an issue identifier such as ABC-123 and returns the issue's main fields, comments, labels, and URL.

linear_create_issue requires a title and accepts an optional description. Its response includes the new issue's ID, key, title, and URL.

linear_list_teams helps identify available team IDs, names, keys, and descriptions before creating or filtering issues. linear_search provides text-based issue discovery and returns matching issue summaries.

Limitations and notes

The Linear MCP server covers the tools documented for this package; the material does not describe update, delete, comment, project-management, or cycle-management tools. The hosted pack endpoint also adds shared Pipeworx meta-tools, so its tool list is larger than the five Linear-specific tools. The local stdio package does not include those shared tools or cross-catalog routing through ask_pipeworx.

The gateway connects to a connected Linear account, while the local package avoids the gateway entirely. Choose the hosted form when Pipeworx authentication and gateway routing are useful, and the local form when the client should communicate directly with a stdio process.

Frequently Asked Questions about Linear

Linear is an MCP server that connects AI clients to a Linear account through the Linear GraphQL API. Its main tools list and filter workspace issues, retrieve issue details, create issues, list teams, and search issues. It can run through Pipeworx or locally over stdio.

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-linear` for the local stdio version. Add that command to your MCP client's server configuration, or use the hosted URL `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/linear/mcp` with a connected Linear account through Pipeworx.

Yes, the Linear MCP server can be added to Cursor using the hosted Pipeworx MCP URL or the local `npx` command. The README also names Claude Desktop and Windsurf as compatible client examples.

Yes, `linear_create_issue` creates a Linear issue from a required title and optional description. The response includes the issue ID, key, title, and URL.

Use `linear_list_issues` with Linear's `IssueFilter` structure. Filters can target teams, date ranges, state, priority, assignee, project, cycle, or labels, and supported conditions can be combined.
