Overview

Last Fm MCP server exposes Last.fm artist, album, track, chart, tag, and user listening data through MCP tools. It can run locally over stdio with the npm package or through the Pipeworx gateway over MCP and HTTP. A Last.fm API key is required, supplied through the platform configuration or a BYO request parameter. Reach for it when an agent needs structured music metadata, artist discovery, track search, or listening-history rankings.

Use cases

  • Look up artist biographies, tags, and related artists
  • Search Last.fm for tracks by text query
  • Compare a user's top tracks across listening periods
  • Find popular artists by tag or global chart
  • Retrieve album and track metadata

Key features

  • Artist metadata, tags, biographies, and similar artists
  • Album and track metadata lookup
  • Track search with configurable limits
  • User top-track rankings by time period
  • Tag and global artist charts
  • Local stdio and hosted MCP access

How Last Fm works

What Last Fm MCP server does

Last Fm MCP server connects AI agents to the Last.fm API at https://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/. Its tools cover metadata lookup and music discovery for artists, albums, and tracks, plus rankings based on tags, global charts, and a Last.fm user's listening history.

The package is available in two forms. A hosted Pipeworx endpoint provides MCP access through a scoped Last.fm URL, while the npm package runs as a local stdio process. The hosted option also exposes Pipeworx-wide meta-tools, whereas the standalone process exposes only the tools belonging to this package.

How it works

With the gateway configuration, an MCP client connects to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/last-fm/mcp. The endpoint lists the Last.fm tools along with shared Pipeworx tools such as ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, and remember/recall. The exact tool scope is reported by the connection's initialize response.

The same gateway can be reached through the full https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp endpoint. In that mode, all catalog packs are listed directly rather than only the Last.fm pack. The gateway can also be called over HTTP, including direct POST requests to a tool-specific path such as /v1/tools/artist_info.

The local mode communicates through stdin and stdout and responds to standard MCP operations including initialize, tools/list, and tools/call. It does not include the gateway's shared routing tools.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the Last.fm pack URL to an MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf. The package supports a platform credential named PLATFORM_LASTFM_KEY. Requests can instead provide a caller-owned key with the _apiKey query parameter.

To run locally without a Pipeworx account, configure the client to execute npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-last-fm, or run that command directly to check that the process starts. The README identifies the Last.fm API key as free to obtain from Last.fm's API account page.

Tools and capabilities

Last Fm MCP server provides tools for:

  • Retrieving an artist biography, related artists, and tags.
  • Listing an artist's most-played tracks or similar artists.
  • Reading album and track metadata.
  • Searching for tracks by query.
  • Listing a user's top tracks for periods from seven days through all time.
  • Finding top artists for a tag or across the global chart.

The artist and album or track tools accept optional MusicBrainz IDs where supported. Several discovery tools accept a result limit, and user rankings support overall, 7day, 1month, 3month, 6month, and 12month periods.

Limitations and notes

The gateway pack endpoint includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the pack's own tools, so its reported tool count is larger than the Last.fm list. Use the standalone npm process when only this pack's tools are wanted, or use the full gateway when direct access to the broader catalog is preferable.

Although the package description mentions scrobbling, no dedicated scrobbling tool is listed in the provided tool definitions. An API key is required for Last.fm access, even though the gateway's first calls do not require a separate Pipeworx account. The project is licensed under MIT.

Frequently Asked Questions about Last Fm

Last Fm is an MCP server that connects AI agents to the Last.fm API for music data. Its main tools retrieve artist, album, and track metadata, search tracks, find similar artists, and return user, tag, and global rankings. It runs locally over stdio or through the Pipeworx gateway.

Install it by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-last-fm`. This starts the standalone package over stdin and stdout without a Pipeworx account. You can also connect to the hosted MCP URL at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/last-fm/mcp`.

It requires a Last.fm API key. Hosted configuration can use `PLATFORM_LASTFM_KEY`, while BYO requests can pass a key with the `_apiKey` query parameter.

Add the hosted Last.fm MCP URL to Cursor, or configure Cursor to launch the local npm package with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-last-fm`.

Yes, the Pipeworx gateway exposes tool-specific HTTP endpoints. For example, send a JSON POST request to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/artist_info` with an artist argument. The gateway also provides an endpoint for inspecting individual tools.
