We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @jetbrains/mcp-proxy

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 25d ago.

Overview

The jetbrains/mcpProxy MCP server proxies MCP requests from compatible clients to JetBrains IDEs, including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and Android Studio. It runs through npx and connects to the IDE’s built-in web server, with optional host, port, and logging settings. Use it only for older setups because IntelliJ-based IDEs include the functionality natively from version 2025.2.

Use cases

  • Connect an MCP client to an older JetBrains IDE
  • Route MCP requests to IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, or WebStorm
  • Select a specific IDE instance by port
  • Connect an external or containerized client through a LAN address

Key features

  • Proxies MCP requests to JetBrains IDEs
  • Supports IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and Android Studio
  • Runs through npx as a stdio process
  • Configures IDE host and port
  • Optional request logging

How McpProxy works

What jetbrains/mcpProxy MCP server does

The jetbrains/mcpProxy MCP server forwards requests from an MCP client to a JetBrains IDE. It is intended for IntelliJ-based products such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and Android Studio. The proxy does not provide an independent IDE integration; the JetBrains MCP Server plugin and an open IDE supply the connected functionality.

This project is deprecated. Its core behavior is now included in IntelliJ-based IDEs beginning with version 2025.2, so new deployments should follow JetBrains’ documentation for the built-in MCP server instead. Existing configurations may still be relevant for older IDE versions.

How it works

The package runs as a local stdio MCP process, typically started with npx -y @jetbrains/mcp-proxy. It connects to the IDE’s built-in web server, using 127.0.0.1 by default, and proxies MCP requests between that service and the client.

Multiple IDE instances can be selected by setting the target port. A different host can also be supplied when the IDE is reachable through a LAN address or another network interface. External clients and containerized applications may require the IDE’s “Can accept external connections” setting to be enabled.

Setup and configuration

Install the MCP Server plugin in the JetBrains IDE, then register the proxy command in the client. VS Code uses an mcp.servers entry, while Claude Desktop uses an mcpServers entry. In both cases, the command is npx with -y and @jetbrains/mcp-proxy as arguments. Restart the client after configuration and ensure the JetBrains product is open.

The jetbrains/mcpProxy MCP server supports these environment variables:

  • IDE_PORT: selects the IDE web-server port.
  • HOST: changes the IDE host; localhost is the default.
  • LOG_ENABLED: enables logging when set to true.

Node.js 18 or later is required. On macOS, installations managed by nvm may need an /usr/local/bin/npx symlink so the JetBrains plugin can locate npx.

Tools and capabilities

The jetbrains/mcpProxy MCP server exposes the MCP functionality provided by the connected JetBrains IDE through a client-accessible proxy. Its role is transport and request forwarding rather than adding a separate catalog of tools. It can be used from the 💻 Developer Tools category when an MCP client needs to reach an older JetBrains IDE integration.

The repository documents setup for VS Code and Claude Desktop, and discusses external clients such as Cline and container-based applications. For Docker or LAN-based connections, configure the IDE port and host explicitly and use the machine’s LAN IP when required.

Limitations and notes

The repository is no longer maintained. IntelliJ-based IDEs from version 2025.2 include the core functionality, including SSE and a JVM-based proxy for stdio, making this npm package unnecessary for those versions.

The proxy does not work with Node.js 16; upgrade to Node.js 18 or newer. Connections can fail when an IDE is not running, external connections are disabled, the host or port is incorrect, or a container attempts to use an unsuitable address such as host.docker.internal. JetBrains directs issues for the built-in functionality to YouTrack.

Frequently Asked Questions about McpProxy

jetbrains/mcpProxy is an MCP server that connects MCP clients to JetBrains IDEs through the IDE’s built-in web server. Its main capability is proxying MCP requests and IDE-provided tools for IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, Android Studio, and other IntelliJ-based products. The repository is deprecated for IDEs with built-in support.

Install the JetBrains MCP Server plugin, then add an MCP configuration that runs `npx -y @jetbrains/mcp-proxy`. VS Code and Claude Desktop configuration examples are provided. Use Node.js 18 or later, open the JetBrains IDE, and restart the client after saving its configuration.

Yes, jetbrains/mcpProxy has a documented VS Code configuration. Add it as an MCP server using `npx` with `-y` and `@jetbrains/mcp-proxy` as arguments. The repository provides both one-click and manual VS Code setup instructions.

Set `IDE_PORT` to the selected IDE’s built-in web-server port. If the IDE is not on localhost, also set `HOST` to its address. Multiple running IDEs can therefore be distinguished by port, provided the relevant IDE services are available.

No, jetbrains/mcpProxy requires Node.js 18 or later. Node.js 16 can produce a `Cannot find module 'node:path'` error. Ensure the configured command points to the newer Node.js installation, using its full path if necessary.
