How Itunes Search works

What Itunes Search MCP server does

The Itunes Search MCP server connects AI clients to Apple’s public iTunes Store catalog. It can search across music, movies, podcasts, audiobooks, ebooks, software, and apps, making it suitable for catalog discovery, metadata retrieval, and basic chart queries.

The package does not require Apple credentials or another authentication token. It is available as a hosted MCP endpoint through the Pipeworx gateway and as a standalone npm package that communicates over standard input and output.

How it works

The Itunes Search MCP server maps its search operations to Apple’s public HTTP APIs. General searches use https://itunes.apple.com/search, while exact lookups use https://itunes.apple.com/lookup. Chart tools read RSS data from Apple’s marketing tools API.

Its primary tools are:

  • search for keyword-based catalog queries, with optional media, entity, attribute, country, language, result-limit, and explicit-content parameters.
  • lookup for finding records by identifiers such as an iTunes ID, bundle ID, ISBN, UPC, or AMG identifier.
  • top_movies, top_podcasts, and top_books for selected country-specific charts. Book results can be filtered by free or paid status.

Search and lookup requests are subject to an approximate limit of 20 requests per minute per IP address. Chart responses are static and cached.

Setup and configuration

The Itunes Search MCP server can be added remotely with the hosted endpoint https://gateway.pipeworx.io/itunes-search/mcp. The README gives configuration examples for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf. The hosted connection includes the pack’s tools plus shared Pipeworx gateway tools such as discovery and routing functions.

For a local connection, run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-itunes-search and configure the MCP client with an npx command and the same package argument. The local process uses stdin and stdout, needs no Pipeworx account, and exposes only the Itunes Search tools rather than the gateway’s shared meta-tools. No environment variables or credentials are documented as required.

The tools can also be called through the gateway’s HTTP interface. For example, a client can POST a JSON body containing a term to the corresponding search tool endpoint.

Tools and capabilities

The Itunes Search MCP server supports broad catalog searches, exact record retrieval, and three chart categories. Search and lookup parameters allow clients to narrow results by country and content type, while lookup identifiers support several media-specific identification schemes.

Choose the hosted endpoint when an MCP client needs a remote connection or Pipeworx routing. Choose the standalone package when the client should communicate locally and use only this catalog’s tools. The service is focused on Apple catalog data and does not provide general web search.
