Overview

The Ipma Pt MCP server exposes IPMA Portugal data for weather, UV, sea conditions, earthquakes, and supported locations. It provides five tools for Portuguese cities, islands, coastal zones, and seismic areas, returning structured forecast and event details. Connect through the Pipeworx streamable HTTP endpoint, use the standalone npm package over stdio, or call tools through the gateway HTTP API. Reach for it when an agent needs current Portugal-focused environmental or geographic data.

Use cases

  • Check five-day weather for a Portuguese city
  • Assess UV exposure before outdoor activities
  • Compare wave conditions across Portuguese coastal zones
  • Review recent earthquakes in the Azores
  • Find IPMA location identifiers for supported places

Key features

  • Official IPMA five-day weather forecasts
  • Three-day UV forecasts with risk levels
  • Sea-state data for 12 Portuguese coastal zones
  • Recent earthquake records for Portugal and the Azores
  • Searchable IPMA forecast locations
  • Hosted and standalone stdio MCP access

How Ipma Pt works

What the Ipma Pt MCP server does

The Ipma Pt MCP server connects MCP clients to data published by IPMA Portugal. Its tools cover five related areas: five-day weather forecasts, short-term UV forecasts, coastal sea conditions, recent earthquakes, and the locations available for IPMA weather forecasts.

Weather results can include daily minimum and maximum temperatures in degrees Celsius, precipitation probability, an English weather description, and wind direction and strength. UV results provide daily peak-hour ultraviolet values for roughly the next three days, along with a risk category from Low to Extreme. Sea forecasts include significant wave height, wave period, wave direction, and sea-surface temperature.

The seismic tool reports recent events for mainland Portugal and Madeira or for the Azores. Returned fields can include event time, magnitude, depth, epicenter region, coordinates, and felt intensity when available. The data covers approximately the previous 30 days.

How it works

The MCP package defines five tools: ipma_forecast, ipma_uv_forecast, ipma_sea_forecast, ipma_seismic, and ipma_locations. Weather and UV tools accept Portuguese city or island names such as Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Funchal, or Ponta Delgada. Sea forecasts cover 12 coastal zones across mainland Portugal, Madeira, and the Azores. The locations tool can search supported places and return their globalIdLocal codes and coordinates region.

A hosted connection is available through the Pipeworx gateway. The pack endpoint lists these tools alongside shared Pipeworx meta-tools, including routing and discovery functions. A full gateway connection lists the broader catalog directly, while ask_pipeworx can route questions to tools across the catalog from either gateway URL.

Setup and configuration

The Ipma Pt MCP server can be added to an MCP client with the hosted endpoint:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ipma-pt": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/ipma-pt/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio use, run the npm package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ipma-pt": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-ipma-pt"]
    }
  }
}

The hosted route can also be called without an MCP client through the gateway HTTP API. For example, send a JSON POST request to /v1/tools/ipma_forecast with a city value.

Tools and capabilities

  • ipma_forecast: Retrieves the official IPMA five-day forecast for supported Portuguese locations.
  • ipma_uv_forecast: Retrieves UV forecasts and risk levels for roughly three days.
  • ipma_sea_forecast: Retrieves wave and sea-temperature conditions for Portuguese coastal zones.
  • ipma_seismic: Retrieves recent Portuguese earthquake records, with optional area and magnitude filtering.
  • ipma_locations: Searches the supported forecast locations and their IPMA identifiers.

Limitations and notes

The Ipma Pt MCP server is focused on Portugal and the locations covered by IPMA. It does not provide a general global weather service. City and coastal-zone coverage depends on the locations supported by the individual tools. Seismic results are limited to recent records, described in the README as roughly the last 30 days.

The hosted pack endpoint includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the five pack tools. The standalone stdio package exposes only the Ipma Pt tools and does not provide ask_pipeworx routing. The project is licensed under MIT.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ipma Pt

Ipma Pt is an MCP server that connects AI clients to IPMA Portugal data. Its main tools provide five-day weather forecasts, UV forecasts, Portuguese sea-state conditions, recent earthquake records, and searchable forecast locations. It can run through the Pipeworx gateway or locally as a standalone stdio package.

Add the hosted Pipeworx MCP URL to your client, or run the local package with npx. The hosted endpoint is https://gateway.pipeworx.io/ipma-pt/mcp; local configuration uses the @pipeworx/mcp-ipma-pt package with the stdio transport.

Yes, the README names Cursor as a supported MCP client. Configure the hosted endpoint in Cursor, or use the documented local npx command for a standalone stdio connection.

Yes, use the Pipeworx HTTP API to call a tool directly. Send a JSON POST request to an endpoint such as https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/ipma_forecast with the required arguments.

Yes, the seismic tool supports the Azores and returns recent IPMA events. Results can include time, magnitude, depth, epicenter region, coordinates, and felt intensity when reported.
