Overview

The instagit MCP server analyzes Git repositories through an AI-backed repository question tool. Agents provide a repository URL or shorthand, a prompt, and optionally a branch, tag, or commit reference; results include source citations with file paths and line numbers. It supports public and private repositories across Git hosts, making it useful for codebase onboarding, dependency integration, debugging, migrations, and architecture reviews. Reach for it when an agent needs repository-specific answers rather than relying on documentation or general training data.

Use cases

  • Explain an unfamiliar repository’s architecture
  • Review authentication code for security issues
  • Plan a dependency or framework migration
  • Trace bugs across application and library boundaries
  • Generate integration guidance from existing code patterns

Key features

  • AI analysis of Git repositories
  • Repository URLs, shorthands, and Git URLs
  • Branch, tag, and commit selection
  • File and line-number source citations
  • Anonymous or API-key authentication
  • Support for public and private repositories

How Instagit works

What the instagit MCP server does

The instagit MCP server gives coding agents a way to ask questions about a Git repository and receive analysis grounded in its source. It is intended for situations where documentation may be incomplete, stale, or insufficient for understanding how a project actually works.

An agent can use repository analysis to inspect architecture, understand component relationships, review authentication code, trace problems across a dependency boundary, or identify the work involved in a version upgrade. It can also use the repository’s implementation to produce integration guidance based on actual constructors, configuration options, methods, parameters, return values, and error behavior.

The service supports public and private repositories, repositories hosted on any Git host, and projects ranging from small codebases to monorepos. Responses include references to relevant files and line numbers, allowing a developer to check the underlying source.

How it works

The MCP tool is named ask_repo. Each request supplies a repo value and a prompt. The repository can be represented by a full URL, an owner/repo shorthand, or another public Git URL. An optional ref selects a branch, tag, or commit SHA; when omitted, analysis uses the repository’s default branch.

The server passes the request to Instagit’s analysis service and returns an answer for the coding agent to use. Example questions include explaining the main architecture, reviewing an authentication implementation for security concerns, finding the established pattern for adding an API endpoint, or assessing an upgrade between framework versions.

Setup and configuration

Node.js 18 or newer is required. A manual MCP configuration can launch the package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "instagit": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "instagit@latest"]
    }
  }
}

The @latest package tag is used in the documented configuration. Instagit can also provide installation instructions through https://instagit.com/install.md for an agent-assisted setup.

Authentication is optional for initial use. Without INSTAGIT_API_KEY, the server registers an anonymous token on first use and stores it at ~/.instagit/token.json. An API key from Instagit can be supplied for authenticated use, including higher rate limits and faster analysis. INSTAGIT_API_URL can replace the production API endpoint when a custom endpoint is needed.

Tools and capabilities

The instagit MCP server exposes one documented tool:

  • ask_repo: asks an AI analysis question about a selected Git repository.
  • repo: accepts a repository URL, shorthand, or public Git URL.
  • prompt: specifies the codebase question or analysis task.
  • ref: optionally selects a branch, tag, or commit SHA.

The tool is suitable for repository onboarding, comparing implementations, planning migrations, checking how existing patterns should be followed, and investigating behavior that spans an application and one of its dependencies. Its answers are designed to cite the source locations supporting the analysis rather than relying only on keyword matches or general explanations.

Limitations and notes

Repository analysis still depends on the selected source and reference being available to the service. Anonymous access has different limits from authenticated use, while signing up at Instagit provides higher rate limits and faster analysis.

The package requires Node.js 18 or later.

Frequently Asked Questions about Instagit

instagit is an MCP server that connects coding agents to Git repositories for AI-backed source analysis. Its main tool, ask_repo, accepts a repository, prompt, and optional branch, tag, or commit reference, then returns code-grounded answers with file paths and line-number citations.

Install it by adding an MCP entry that runs `npx -y instagit@latest`. Put the `instagit` command and arguments in your client configuration, or provide `https://instagit.com/install.md` to an agent for the documented agentic installation flow. Node.js 18 or newer is required.

No, an API key is not required for initial use. Without `INSTAGIT_API_KEY`, instagit registers an anonymous token on first use and stores it in `~/.instagit/token.json`. An API key is available for authenticated usage with higher rate limits and faster analysis.

Pass the branch, tag, or commit SHA in the optional `ref` parameter of `ask_repo`. Provide the repository in `repo` and your question in `prompt`; if `ref` is omitted, the server analyzes the repository’s default branch.

Yes, the README names Cursor as a supported client. Cursor can use the documented MCP configuration, which launches `npx -y instagit@latest`; the repository also provides a Cursor installation link.
