What the ImmigrationDB MCP server does
The ImmigrationDB MCP server provides read-only access to the hosted ImmigrationDB reference. Its coverage includes 39 countries and more than 27,000 cities, along with visa and residence routes, passport entry information, cost-of-living measures, salaries, crime, air quality, climate, and other migration-related metrics.
City tools support destination search, unambiguous city resolution, complete city records, individual fact retrieval, comparisons, and numeric filtering. Country and legal-information tools return country records, official visa-route links, residence routes, and passport-specific entry rules. Report tools expose published datasets such as largest-city, rent, or air-quality reports when those reports are available.
How it works
The hosted endpoint is https://immigrationdb.com/mcp and does not require an API key or account. It uses Streamable HTTP and supports protocol versions 2026-07-28 and 2025-11-25. The service reads the same release used by the ImmigrationDB website.
Requests use ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, such as de, lv, or us, and canonical city slugs such as berlin. A city name should first be resolved when it could refer to more than one place; the server does not silently select an ambiguous country.
Responses include a snapshot identifier, generation date, and canonical origin. Facts retain their value, unit, geographic grain, observation date, verification date, source identifier, source URL, and grade. Unknown or withheld values remain explicit rather than being estimated. Read operations are annotated as read-only and idempotent.
Setup and configuration
Configure an MCP client with the hosted URL:
{
"mcpServers": {
"immigrationdb": {
"url": "https://immigrationdb.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Claude Code can register the server with:
claude mcp add --transport http immigrationdb https://immigrationdb.com/mcp
Clients limited to stdio can use mcp-remote with npx -y mcp-remote https://immigrationdb.com/mcp. The repository contains a Node 20-or-newer smoke test and does not require an installation step for that test. The repository also publishes tool schemas, registry metadata, and documentation links.
Tools and capabilities
The ImmigrationDB MCP server exposes these read-only operations:
- Search destinations and resolve city names to ranked candidates.
- Retrieve a city, one city fact, metric definitions, or metric-block coverage.
- Compare cities on compatible metrics with provenance for each result cell.
- Filter city facts numerically and return explicit result counts.
- Retrieve country records and official visa-route links.
- Search visa or residence routes and retrieve one route with its official source.
- Search or retrieve passport entry rules, including explicit unknown answers.
- List published reports and retrieve their rows, methods, and sources.
It also defines resources for country records, city facts, legal routes, passport entry answers, and report data. Rate limits and response-size caps apply per client.
Limitations and notes
The ImmigrationDB MCP server is a reference service, not a legal-advice or immigration-services provider. Requirements can change, so users should verify current conditions with the responsible authority before acting. The repository files are MIT-licensed, while ImmigrationDB data is published under CC BY 4.0 and requires credit with a link to the relevant page or resource. Underlying official sources may have separate terms.
The service runs as a hosted endpoint; the README states that the data release itself is several gigabytes and is published as files on the ImmigrationDB website. Response errors identify the requested identifier and snapshot ID, which can help trace a failed lookup to a particular release.
