We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-ilostat

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 4d ago.

Overview

Ilostat MCP server exposes International Labour Organization statistics through tools for finding datasets, inspecting their dimensions, and retrieving observations. Use `list_dataflows` to locate an ILOSTAT dataset, `dataflow_structure` to learn its ordered dimensions and valid codes, then `get_data` with an SDMX key and optional date range. It is available through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package, making it suitable for labour-market research and statistical data retrieval.

Use cases

  • Find ILOSTAT datasets about unemployment or minimum wages
  • Inspect dimension codes before constructing an SDMX query
  • Retrieve annual labour statistics for selected countries
  • Filter observations by measure, sex, age, and date range

Key features

  • Searches ILOSTAT dataflows by keyword
  • Returns dataset dimensions and valid codes
  • Builds SDMX-filtered observation requests
  • Supports country and frequency filters
  • Accepts start and end periods
  • Runs through a gateway or local stdio package

How Ilostat works

What Ilostat MCP server does

Ilostat MCP server gives MCP-compatible clients access to ILOSTAT, the International Labour Organization’s statistics service. The available datasets cover subjects including employment, unemployment, labour-force participation, wages, working hours, informality, working poverty, child labour, and occupational safety. ILOSTAT publishes approximately 1,200 datasets, so dataset discovery is an important part of the workflow.

The server is suited to agents that need to identify a relevant labour-statistics dataset, understand its schema, and retrieve observations for selected countries, frequencies, measures, demographic groups, or periods.

How it works

Start with list_dataflows, preferably with a keyword such as unemployment rate or minimum wage. Each result includes a dataflow ID and an English dataset name. Pass the selected ID to dataflow_structure before requesting observations.

dataflow_structure returns the dataset’s Data Structure Definition, including the ordered dimensions and valid codes for each dimension. Those positions determine how to construct the dot-separated SDMX key used by get_data. Common dimensions include REF_AREA for an ISO3 country code, FREQ for annual, quarterly, or monthly frequency, plus SEX, AGE, and MEASURE. Empty key positions act as wildcards.

get_data returns decoded series with dimension labels and values for each period. It accepts optional start_period and end_period filters. Omitting the key, or sending an empty key, requests all series and may produce a large response.

Setup and configuration

Ilostat MCP server can be connected through the Pipeworx gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/ilostat/mcp. The README provides configuration examples for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf. The gateway requires no account for the first calls described in the documentation.

A standalone option is available through the @pipeworx/mcp-ilostat npm package. Configure an MCP client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-ilostat; the process communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require a Pipeworx account or gateway round trip. The standalone process exposes this pack’s tools only.

The gateway also offers HTTP tool calls, including POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/ilostat_list_dataflows, and a full gateway endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp. Pack connections include shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the ILOSTAT tools; the local package does not.

Tools and capabilities

  • list_dataflows: Search or browse ILOSTAT dataflows by keyword.
  • dataflow_structure: Inspect ordered dimensions and valid dimension codes.
  • get_data: Retrieve observations using SDMX dimension filters and period bounds.

The recommended sequence is to find a dataflow, inspect its structure, then build the key for the data request. This avoids guessing dimension order or code values.

Limitations and notes

The server does not document credentials or required environment variables for the standalone package. Broad requests can be large, particularly when get_data is called without a key. The exact tool list on the gateway can also include shared Pipeworx tools; its initialize response is the authoritative source for the tools exposed by a particular connection.

The Ilostat MCP server focuses on ILOSTAT data access. Questions outside the pack’s tools can be routed through the gateway’s ask_pipeworx capability, but that capability is part of the gateway connection rather than the standalone package.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ilostat

Ilostat is an MCP server that connects AI agents to International Labour Organization statistics through Pipeworx or a local stdio package. Its main tools list ILOSTAT dataflows, inspect dataset structures, and retrieve observations with SDMX dimension filters and date ranges.

Run it locally with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-ilostat` and configure that command in an MCP client. The package communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require a Pipeworx account. You can instead connect to the documented Pipeworx gateway URL.

First call `list_dataflows` to find a dataset, then call `dataflow_structure` to learn its dimension order and valid codes. Finally, call `get_data` with a dot-separated SDMX key and optional `start_period` and `end_period` values.

Yes, the README includes Cursor in its gateway MCP client configuration examples. Connect Cursor to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/ilostat/mcp`, or configure the standalone `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-ilostat` command if you want to run the local stdio package.
