Overview

The Hurricanes MCP server retrieves current tropical cyclone data from the US National Hurricane Center. Its tools list active storms, optionally filtered by basin, and return position, winds, pressure, classification, movement, and official product links. Use it when an agent needs current hurricane information or detailed advisory links without an API key. It is available as a hosted MCP endpoint, a local stdio package, or direct HTTP tool calls.

Use cases

  • List active storms in a selected basin
  • Look up a storm by name or identifier
  • Retrieve official forecast cone and advisory links
  • Check current storm position, winds, pressure, and movement

Key features

  • Active tropical cyclone listings
  • Basin filtering
  • Storm lookup by name or ID
  • National Hurricane Center product links
  • Hosted MCP and local stdio modes
  • Keyless tool access

How Hurricanes works

What Hurricanes MCP server does

The Hurricanes MCP server exposes current tropical cyclone information from the US National Hurricane Center through MCP. It is intended for agents that need to identify active storms, inspect their current status, or locate official National Hurricane Center products.

The active_storms tool returns currently active tropical storms and hurricanes. Each result can include the storm name, classification, Saffir-Simpson category, position, maximum winds, pressure, movement, and links to official advisories and forecast cones. Results can be filtered by basin, such as the Atlantic. During the off-season, the tool may return an empty list.

The storm_details tool looks up one active storm by identifier or name. For example, it can accept an identifier such as al052026 or a name such as Douglas. Its response includes detailed storm information and links to advisory, forecast, cone, and surge products.

How it works

You can connect an MCP client to the hosted endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hurricanes/mcp. The endpoint provides the two Hurricanes tools along with shared Pipeworx gateway tools. The gateway connection can also use ask_pipeworx to route a plain-language question across the wider Pipeworx catalog.

For a connection limited to the Hurricanes package, run @pipeworx/mcp-hurricanes locally through standard input and output. The standalone process answers MCP initialize, tools/list, and tools/call requests and exposes only the package tools. It does not add the gateway's shared meta-tools or require a Pipeworx account.

The same gateway also exposes HTTP tool endpoints. For example, POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/active_storms can receive a JSON body containing a basin filter. Tool definitions can be inspected with GET https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/active_storms.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the following endpoint to an MCP client configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hurricanes": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hurricanes/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio use, configure the package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hurricanes": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-hurricanes"]
    }
  }
}

The tools are keyless.

Tools and capabilities

  • active_storms: Lists active tropical cyclones and supports basin filtering.
  • storm_details: Retrieves detailed information for one active storm by ID or name.
  • Official product links: Results can link to advisories, forecast cones, and surge products.
  • HTTP access: Calls can be made through the gateway's versioned tool endpoint.
  • Plain-language routing: The hosted gateway can use ask_pipeworx for broader Pipeworx questions.

Limitations and notes

The data scope is active tropical cyclones reported by the US National Hurricane Center. storm_details is described for active storms, so it is not presented as an archive lookup for inactive or historical systems. active_storms can return no results outside the active season.

The hosted pack endpoint lists shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the Hurricanes tools. Its exact tool scope is reported by the MCP initialize response and may change. The local stdio package lists only the Hurricanes tools and does not provide cross-catalog routing.

The Hurricanes MCP server supplies links to official products; applications should follow those links when they need the underlying advisory or forecast material.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hurricanes

Hurricanes is an MCP server that connects AI agents to current tropical cyclone data from the US National Hurricane Center. Its main tools, active_storms and storm_details, list active storms or retrieve one storm by name or ID, including classification, location, winds, pressure, movement, and official product links.

Install it as a local stdio server with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-hurricanes. Add that command and package argument to your MCP client's server configuration. This mode does not require a Pipeworx account and communicates through stdin and stdout.

Yes, Hurricanes works with Cursor through the hosted MCP endpoint. Configure `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hurricanes/mcp` as an MCP server URL, or run the package locally with npx using Cursor's stdio configuration.

Send a POST request to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/active_storms` with a JSON body such as `{"basin":"atlantic"}`. The endpoint returns active storm data, and tool definitions are available from the corresponding GET endpoint.

No, the Hurricanes tools are keyless. The hosted endpoint does not require an account for the first calls according to the documentation, and the local stdio package runs without a gateway account.
