Overview

The Hagstova Fo MCP server exposes Statistics Faroe Islands (Hagstova Føroya) PxWeb data through tools for browsing subjects, inspecting table metadata, and running queries. Use the subject tree to find a table, retrieve its dimensions and valid codes, then submit a filtered query that returns json-stat2 observations. It is available as a hosted MCP endpoint through Pipeworx or as a local stdio package installed with npx. Reach for it when an agent needs structured statistical data from Hagstova Føroya rather than general web search.

Use cases

  • Browse Hagstova Føroya subject folders and tables
  • Inspect table dimensions and valid coded values
  • Query selected PxWeb observations
  • Retrieve statistical results as json-stat2

Key features

  • PxWeb subject-tree browsing
  • Table metadata and dimension lookup
  • Coded-value validation for queries
  • Filtered PxWeb table queries
  • json-stat2 observation responses
  • Hosted and local stdio access

How Hagstova Fo works

What the Hagstova Fo MCP server does

The Hagstova Fo MCP server gives MCP-compatible agents access to the Statistics Faroe Islands (Hagstova Føroya) PxWeb database. It supports a metadata-first workflow: find a subject or table, inspect the table's dimensions and allowed values, then request only the observations needed for the task.

The service is intended for questions that depend on structured statistical tables, such as selecting specific dimensions and retrieving machine-readable observations. It does not provide a general-purpose search interface to arbitrary websites; its listed tools operate on the Hagstova Føroya PxWeb subject tree and tables.

How it works

Start with subjects. Calling it with an empty path returns the database list. Further paths expose folders and tables. Under the H2 branch, folders have type l, while tables have type t and identifiers ending in .px. The path returned while browsing becomes the input for the other tools.

Use table_meta with a complete table path, such as H2/UO/UO01/land_oyfj.px. The response describes the table's dimensions and supplies the coded values accepted by each dimension. Those codes are needed to construct a valid query.

Finally, call query_table with a PxWeb request body. Each query item identifies a dimension by code and provides a selection containing a filter and selected values. The response format must be json-stat2. PxWeb enforces a cell limit, so select a narrow set of values for every dimension instead of requesting an entire large table.

Setup and configuration

The hosted connection uses this MCP URL:

https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hagstova-fo/mcp

The pack endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the three Hagstova tools. Its initialize response is the authoritative source for the tools available at connection time. The full gateway is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp when an agent needs direct access to all catalog packs.

For a local connection, install and run the package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hagstova-fo": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-hagstova-fo"]
    }
  }
}

The local process communicates over stdin and stdout and provides only this pack's tools.

Tools and capabilities

  • subjects: Browse the Hagstova Føroya PxWeb hierarchy and locate folders or .px tables.
  • table_meta: Read dimension definitions and valid coded values for a specific table.
  • query_table: Submit filtered PxWeb selections and receive observations in json-stat2 format.

The Hagstova Fo MCP server can also be used through the hosted gateway's ask_pipeworx tool. That route accepts a plain-English question and can choose a catalog tool and populate its arguments, but it belongs to the shared gateway layer rather than the standalone local package.

Limitations and notes

Queries must use valid dimension codes and values obtained from the selected table's metadata. Requests that exceed PxWeb's cell limit are rejected, so narrowing selections is part of the normal workflow. The hosted pack endpoint includes shared gateway tools, whereas the standalone stdio server exposes only the three pack-specific tools. Both connection styles use the same Hagstova source and tool set for this pack.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hagstova Fo

Hagstova Fo is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Statistics Faroe Islands (Hagstova Føroya) PxWeb data. Its main tools browse the subject tree, retrieve table dimensions and valid coded values, and submit filtered PxWeb queries that return observations in json-stat2 format.

Install it locally with npx using the package @pipeworx/mcp-hagstova-fo. Configure an MCP client with the command npx and the arguments -y and @pipeworx/mcp-hagstova-fo, or connect to the hosted endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hagstova-fo/mcp.

Yes, Hagstova Fo works with Cursor through the documented hosted MCP endpoint. Add https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hagstova-fo/mcp as an MCP server in Cursor, or use the local npx stdio configuration.

First use subjects to locate a table, then call table_meta with its full .px path to obtain dimension codes and valid values. Pass those selections to query_table in the required PxWeb body and request json-stat2; keep selections narrow to avoid PxWeb's cell limit.
