We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-hagstofa-is

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 9d ago.

Overview

Hagstofa Is MCP server exposes Statistics Iceland’s Hagstofa Íslands PxWeb data through MCP. It lets agents browse subject and database paths, inspect table dimensions and valid values, and submit PxWeb queries for table data. Use it when an agent needs structured Icelandic statistics without an API key. It is available through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Browse Statistics Iceland subject and database trees
  • Inspect PxWeb table dimensions and valid values
  • Query filtered Icelandic statistics tables
  • Run the tools locally over MCP stdio

Key features

  • Subject-tree navigation
  • PxWeb table metadata lookup
  • Filtered table data queries
  • Hosted MCP endpoint
  • Local stdio package
  • Keyless access

How Hagstofa Is works

What Hagstofa Is MCP server does

Hagstofa Is MCP server connects MCP-compatible agents to Statistics Iceland’s PxWeb data service. The server provides three pack-specific tools: subjects for navigating the database hierarchy, table_meta for reading a table’s schema, and query_table for retrieving data.

The source organizes content as databases, folders, and tables. A table is identified by a path ending in .px. Agents can first explore available subjects, then inspect a selected table’s dimensions and permitted values before constructing a query. This sequence helps callers use the correct codes and keep requests within PxWeb’s limits.

How it works

Hagstofa Is MCP server accepts MCP tool calls through either the hosted Pipeworx endpoint or a local process. The hosted endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hagstofa-is/mcp. Its tools/list response includes the three Hagstofa tools and shared Pipeworx gateway tools, so the visible tool count is larger than the pack-specific list. The gateway also exposes ask_pipeworx, which can route natural-language questions across the wider Pipeworx catalog.

The local package communicates over standard input and output and exposes only the Hagstofa pack’s tools. Both modes use the same underlying source and do not require an API key. Direct HTTP tool calls are also documented through the gateway’s /v1/tools/ endpoints.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the MCP URL to a compatible client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hagstofa-is": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hagstofa-is/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio use, run the published package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hagstofa-is": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-hagstofa-is"]
    }
  }
}

The material does not specify environment variables or additional configuration. The hosted gateway does not require an account for its first calls, while the local mode avoids the gateway and its account requirements entirely.

Tools and capabilities

  • subjects: Lists databases at the root and folders or tables below a selected path. Folder entries use type l; table entries use type t and end in .px.
  • table_meta: Returns a table definition, including dimensions and valid values. Its path must include the .px suffix.
  • query_table: Retrieves table data using a PxWeb query object. Its path also requires the .px suffix.

A practical workflow is to find a table with subjects, call table_meta to identify valid dimension values, and then submit a narrowly filtered query_table request.

Limitations and notes

PxWeb limits request size. Queries should filter dimensions so the requested cell count stays small. The scoped gateway endpoint always includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools; there is no documented option to remove them from that connection. Use the local package when the agent should expose only the three Hagstofa tools, or use the full Pipeworx gateway when direct access to all catalog packs is preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hagstofa Is

Hagstofa Is is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Statistics Iceland’s Hagstofa Íslands PxWeb data service. Its main tools browse subject trees, inspect table metadata, and query table data. It supports hosted gateway access and a local stdio package, and requires no API key.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-hagstofa-is`. The package communicates over stdin and stdout. Alternatively, add the hosted MCP URL `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hagstofa-is/mcp` to the client configuration.

Yes, Hagstofa Is works with Cursor through the hosted MCP endpoint. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/hagstofa-is/mcp` to Cursor’s MCP configuration, or configure the local `npx` stdio command.

First use `subjects` to locate a table, then call `table_meta` to inspect its dimensions and valid values, and finally send a PxWeb query object to `query_table`. Include the table’s `.px` suffix and filter dimensions to keep the request within PxWeb’s size limits.
