Overview

The Gnews MCP server connects AI clients to the GNews API for global article searches and current headlines. Its two dedicated tools search by keyword or retrieve top stories, with language, country, and category filters. You can connect through the Pipeworx gateway over MCP or run the package locally over stdio with npx. Reach for it when an agent needs structured news results rather than general web search.

Use cases

  • Search articles about a current topic
  • Monitor headlines by country and language
  • Filter breaking news by category
  • Collect structured article metadata for an agent workflow

Key features

  • Keyword-based global news search
  • Current top-headline retrieval
  • Language and country filters
  • Category filtering for headlines
  • Structured article metadata
  • Local stdio or hosted MCP access

How Gnews works

What the Gnews MCP server does

The Gnews MCP server gives MCP-compatible AI clients access to news data from GNews. It exposes two tools for different retrieval patterns:

  • search_news finds articles that match a keyword or phrase, such as “climate change” or “AI regulation.” Results include the article title, description, content snippet, source, and publication date. Language and country filters can narrow the search.
  • top_headlines retrieves current leading stories. It can filter by category, country code, and language, and returns up to 100 articles with title, description, source, and publication date. Supported categories include general, world, nation, business, technology, entertainment, sports, science, and health.

This makes the Gnews MCP server suitable for assistants that need current article discovery, topic monitoring, or a filtered headline feed.

How it works

The hosted option uses a Pipeworx MCP endpoint. A client connects to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/gnews/mcp, where the GNews tools are listed along with shared Pipeworx gateway tools. The gateway also provides ask_pipeworx, which can route a natural-language request across the broader catalog. The full gateway is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp when direct access to all listed packs is preferred.

The local option runs the package as an MCP server over stdin and stdout. It exposes only the Gnews tools and does not add the gateway’s shared meta-tools. Both connection methods use MCP operations such as initialize, tools/list, and tools/call.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the Gnews endpoint to an MCP client configuration. The README names Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf as supported client examples. For local use, configure the server with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-gnews, or run that command directly to verify that it starts.

The local package does not require a Pipeworx account. Gateway HTTP calls may require your own GNews API key: anonymous calls to the documented HTTP tool endpoint pass the key as _apiKey alongside the tool arguments. The top_headlines tool specifically requires a bring-your-own API key.

Tools and capabilities

The Gnews MCP server provides:

  • Keyword-based article search
  • Global news retrieval
  • Language and country filtering for searches
  • Current headline retrieval
  • Category, country-code, and language filtering for headlines
  • Results containing titles, descriptions, sources, dates, and—in searches—content snippets
  • Up to 100 articles from the headlines tool

The gateway also exposes inspection and routing functions beyond these pack-specific tools, while the standalone package keeps the tool set limited to Gnews functionality.

Limitations and notes

Results depend on the GNews API and its available coverage. The material does not specify retention, ranking, pagination, or full-article retrieval behavior. top_headlines requires a user-provided API key, and gateway HTTP access may also require one. Hosted pack connections currently include shared Pipeworx meta-tools; use the standalone package if you need only the two Gnews tools without those additions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Gnews

Gnews is an MCP server that connects AI clients to the GNews API for global news retrieval. Its main tools are search_news, which searches articles by keyword with language and country filters, and top_headlines, which returns current headlines with optional category, country, and language filters.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-gnews`. The package communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require a Pipeworx account. You can also connect to the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/gnews/mcp`.

Yes, Gnews works with Cursor through the hosted MCP endpoint or the local npx configuration. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/gnews/mcp` as a remote MCP server, or configure the command `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-gnews` for a local connection.

Yes, `top_headlines` requires your own GNews API key. For anonymous gateway HTTP requests, pass the key as `_apiKey` with the tool arguments.
