We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

We ran the install command but it didn't respond within our test window — this can mean a slow first-time install rather than a real problem.

python -m yootheme_mcp_lite

Process exited before answering initialize.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 1d ago.

Overview

GMC YOOtheme MCP Lite connects an MCP client to authorized WordPress REST or Joomla Web Services sites through four local, read-only tools. It lists configured site aliases, performs an authenticated connection check, returns up to ten page or article metadata records, and summarizes node counts and types from JSON supplied by the user. The server runs locally over stdio and requires Python 3.10 or newer. Reach for it when an agent needs basic CMS visibility without editing, publishing, exporting, or bulk-management features.

Use cases

  • List configured WordPress and Joomla site aliases
  • Check authenticated CMS connectivity
  • Inspect a small set of page or article records
  • Summarize node types in supplied layout JSON

Key features

  • Read-only WordPress REST and Joomla Web Services access
  • Authenticated connection checks
  • Page and article metadata capped at ten records
  • Local layout JSON node counts and types
  • Local stdio execution with restricted HTTP behavior

How GMC YOOtheme MCP Lite works

What GMC YOOtheme MCP Lite does

GMC YOOtheme MCP Lite provides a small, read-only interface for checking authorized WordPress and Joomla sites from an MCP-compatible client. It is intended for basic site visibility rather than content administration or layout editing.

The four available tools are:

  • yootheme_lite_list_sites returns configured aliases and their platforms.
  • yootheme_lite_ping_site makes one authenticated GET request and reports a sanitized status.
  • yootheme_lite_list_pages returns up to ten page or article titles, IDs, and statuses. It does not export page content.
  • yootheme_lite_summarize_layout accepts the text of a supplied layout JSON document and reports node counts and types.

The layout summary operates on JSON supplied to the tool, including the example layout file. A generic page listing is not a check that YOOtheme is installed, and YOOtheme licensing remains separate from this software.

How it works

The process runs locally as a stdio MCP server. Online operations use a restricted GET allowlist, verified TLS, a maximum of one request at a time for each configured base URL, a two-second interval, and a 1 MiB response limit. Redirects and arbitrary URLs are not supported. HTTP is accepted only for exact loopback hosts. A 403 or 415 response stops later requests to the affected base URL until the process is restarted.

WordPress connections use the REST API and an Application Password. Joomla connections use Web Services and a token. WordPress can use either pretty REST URLs or query-mode URLs through the rest_mode setting, and subdirectory installations are supported in the base URL.

Setup and configuration

Use Python 3.10 or newer. Clone the GitHub repository, create a virtual environment, and install the package from the local checkout. The Lite package is distributed through GitHub rather than PyPI.

Copy sites.example.json to a local sites.json, retain only sites you own or are authorized to access, and keep the file outside committed source. Set YOOTHEME_MCP_LITE_SITES to its absolute path. Site entries refer to credential environment-variable names, including the configured username and password names and the applicable Joomla token or key name; pass those credential variables to the MCP server's child process rather than storing their values in JSON or chat messages.

Configure the MCP client with mcp.example.json, replacing its placeholders with absolute paths to the Python executable and configuration file. A sensible first session calls yootheme_lite_list_sites, followed by yootheme_lite_ping_site.

Tools and capabilities

The server exposes site discovery, authenticated reachability checks, limited page metadata, and local layout-structure summaries. The page tool is capped at ten records per call. Layout input is limited to 64 KiB and produces counts and types without returning settings or content.

Its scope deliberately excludes creating, editing, or publishing layouts and documents; full import or export; bulk editing; backups; restoration; SSH; uploads; remote HTTP hosting; license switching; and Pro modules. The Pro implementation is separately distributed and is not bundled with Lite.

Limitations and notes

This server does not provide a graphical settings panel or guaranteed upgrade popup. It exposes an Upgrade to Pro MCP resource containing a capability comparison and plan information, while the Lite tools continue to work without an upgrade.

Use only authorized CMS credentials and local configuration files. The software is available under a limited commercial licence, and source visibility does not grant redistribution or resale rights. The paid Pro product and YOOtheme licences are separate.

Frequently Asked Questions about GMC YOOtheme MCP Lite

GMC YOOtheme MCP Lite is an MCP server that connects local AI clients to authorized WordPress REST and Joomla Web Services sites. Its main tools list site aliases, check authenticated connectivity, return up to ten page or article metadata records, and summarize node counts and types from layout JSON supplied by the user.

Install it from the GitHub repository inside a Python 3.10-or-newer virtual environment. Clone the repository, create `.venv`, and run the platform-specific `pip install .` command using the environment's Python executable. The Lite package is not installed from PyPI.

Set credentials through environment variables named by each site's configuration rather than putting secrets in JSON or chat. WordPress requires REST API access with an Application Password; Joomla requires Web Services access with a token. Also set `YOOTHEME_MCP_LITE_SITES` to the absolute path of the local sites file.

No, GMC YOOtheme MCP Lite is read-only and cannot create, edit, or publish layouts or documents. It can list limited page metadata and summarize node counts and types from JSON supplied locally. Editing, publishing, import/export, bulk editing, backups, and restoration belong to separately distributed Pro functionality.

Yes, it can be used with Cursor as a standard local stdio MCP server. Configure the client with the absolute Python executable and configuration-file paths, and ensure the credential environment variables are passed to the child process.
