We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

We ran the install command but it didn't respond within our test window — this can mean a slow first-time install rather than a real problem.

python -m gmcbuilder_mcp_lite

Process exited before answering initialize.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 2d ago.

Overview

GMC Builder MCP Lite provides four local, read-only MCP tools for inspecting GMC Builder installations and supplied layout JSON. It connects to authorized WordPress or Joomla sites using configured credentials, then exposes site aliases, sanitized connection status, and up to ten element type names. Layout summaries are computed locally from JSON text and return node counts and types without settings or content. Reach for it when you need a lightweight pre-editing check; it does not edit, publish, export, or back up layouts.

Use cases

  • Check configured GMC Builder site aliases before a session
  • Verify an authenticated WordPress or Joomla connection
  • List a small set of available builder element types
  • Summarize node counts and types from local layout JSON

Key features

  • Local stdio MCP server
  • Read-only site alias and platform listing
  • Sanitized authenticated connection probe
  • Up to ten element types per call
  • Local layout JSON counts and type summary
  • Restricted GET access with TLS verification

How GMC Builder MCP Lite works

What GMC Builder MCP Lite does

GMC Builder MCP Lite is a free, limited companion for developers and site owners who want read-only checks before editing GMC Builder sites. It runs locally as an MCP server over stdio and provides four tools:

  • gmcbuilder_lite_list_sites returns configured site aliases and platforms.
  • gmcbuilder_lite_ping_site performs one authenticated GET and reports sanitized status information.
  • gmcbuilder_lite_list_element_types returns up to ten builder element type names.
  • gmcbuilder_lite_summarize_layout analyzes layout JSON supplied as the layout_json argument and returns element counts and types.

The server does not include the separate GMC Pro implementation or the GMC Builder CMS product itself.

How it works

Site access is defined in a local JSON configuration file. Each configured entry identifies a site, platform, base URL, and the environment variable names used for credentials. WordPress requires the GMC Builder authoring API version 2.0.0 or newer and an Application Password. Joomla requires the remote API version 2.0.1 or newer and the shared X-Gmc-Builder-Key.

Online operations use a restricted GET allowlist, verified TLS, no redirects, and a maximum response size of 1 MiB. Requests are limited to one at a time per configured base URL with a two-second interval. HTTP is accepted only for exact loopback hosts. A 403 or 415 response prevents further requests to that base URL until the process restarts.

Layout inspection is local. Provide the text represented by layout.example.json; the tool reports counts and type names rather than settings, content, schemas, or kit exports.

Setup and configuration

Use Python 3.10 or newer. Clone the GitHub repository, create a virtual environment, and install the package from the local checkout; Lite is distributed through GitHub rather than PyPI.

Copy sites.example.json to a local sites.json, retain only sites you own or are authorized to access, and keep credentials out of the file. Set GMCBUILDER_MCP_LITE_SITES to the absolute path of that configuration file. Also provide the credential variables whose names are referenced by each site entry, and ensure the MCP client passes them to the server process.

Configure the MCP client with the absolute paths to the Python executable and site configuration, following mcp.example.json. Start by calling gmcbuilder_lite_list_sites, then use gmcbuilder_lite_ping_site to verify an authenticated connection. WordPress installations can use rest_mode: "query" where pretty REST URLs are unavailable; subdirectory installations are supported in the base URL.

Limitations and notes

Lite is strictly read-only. It cannot create, edit, or publish layouts or documents, and it does not provide full import/export, bulk editing, backups, restoration, schema inspection, or kit export. The Pro capabilities shown through the gmc://lite/pro-features resource are informational and do not bundle Pro code or executable tools.

No remote HTTP server, file uploads, arbitrary URL access, SSH support, license switching, or Pro modules are included. Keep sites.json local and do not place credential values in committed files or MCP conversations. The project describes its initial release as source- and package-inspected; site integration and runtime testing are not presented as production certification.

Frequently Asked Questions about GMC Builder MCP Lite

GMC Builder MCP Lite is an MCP server that connects to configured GMC Builder sites on WordPress or Joomla and analyzes supplied layout JSON. Its main tools list site aliases, check authenticated connections, return up to ten element type names, and summarize layout node counts and types. All operations are read-only.

Install it from the GitHub repository using Python 3.10 or newer. Clone the repository, create a virtual environment, and run the platform-specific local package installation command. Configure the MCP client with absolute paths to the Python executable and local site configuration file.

Set `GMCBUILDER_MCP_LITE_SITES` to an absolute local `sites.json` path and provide the credential environment variables referenced by each site entry. WordPress uses an Application Password with the GMC Builder authoring API, while Joomla uses its shared `X-Gmc-Builder-Key`.

No, GMC Builder MCP Lite is read-only and cannot create, edit, or publish layouts or documents. It also excludes full import/export, bulk editing, backups, restoration, settings inspection, and kit export; those capabilities are associated with the separate Pro product.
