Overview

Glazecalc MCP server connects AI assistants to Glazecalc's ceramic glaze library, chemistry calculators, guides, and account records through the MCP endpoint at `/mcp`. It can calculate unity formulas, Stull chart placement, thermal expansion, firing-fit guidance, material substitutions, recipe matches, blends, and material variations. Account access adds recipe, material, shelf, firing-log, notebook, and settings operations, including approved changes. Reach for Glazecalc when an agent needs chemistry-based glaze development or wants to work with a potter's saved records rather than only answer general ceramics questions.

Use cases

  • Analyze a glaze recipe and inspect its unity formula
  • Check a recipe against firing-band limits
  • Find substitutes for discontinued glaze materials
  • Solve a recipe from materials on hand
  • Generate blend or material-variation test tiles

Key features

  • Unity formula and oxide analysis
  • Stull chart and thermal-expansion calculations
  • Material substitutions and recipe solving
  • Cone, temperature, and firing-fit guidance
  • Recipe blends and material variations
  • Glazecalc account and shelf management

How Glazecalc works

What Glazecalc does

Glazecalc provides MCP tools for ceramic glaze chemistry and potter-focused record keeping. Its shared library contains glaze materials and colorants with oxide data, aliases, manufacturer information, hazards, and source data. Agents can look up materials, inspect their chemistry, search plain-language guides, and convert between cone and temperature values.

The chemistry tools work from base-material recipes. They calculate a Seger or unity molecular formula, oxide groups, silica-to-alumina ratio, fired analysis, loss on ignition, and estimated thermal expansion. Several tools also report a position on Stull's chart, recommended-limit cautions, and a chemistry-based fit to a stated firing. These outputs are guides derived from published figures; they are not firing results or food-safety certification.

How it works

The server is exposed at Glazecalc's /mcp endpoint and can be connected to MCP-compatible assistants. Public library and calculation operations can be used without managing a personal collection. Access to saved records uses Glazecalc's OAuth connection or an access token; read-only access is available unless permission to change records is granted.

Material names should be resolved with search_materials before passing them to recipe tools. Calculation tools accept base materials and amounts, while colorants are excluded from blend, variation, comparison, and solver operations.

Account changes are deliberate operations. Recipes, custom materials, notebook entries, and shelf contents can be created, updated, moved to Trash, or restored in the case of shelf changes. Recipe and custom-material edits retain an earlier version for undoing changes on the website. Trash removal is reversible on the website for 30 days.

Tools and capabilities

  • Search the material library, retrieve material chemistry and hazards, and find potter guides.
  • Analyze recipes, check recommended limits, estimate firing fit, and convert cones and temperatures.
  • Replace discontinued or scarce materials while keeping the unity formula close to the original.
  • Rebuild recipes from an available shelf or solve toward a unity-formula or oxide-analysis target.
  • Generate line blends, triaxial blends, and material-variation progressions for test tiles.
  • Compare recipes by oxides, materials, calculated expansion, Stull placement, and cautions.
  • List and retrieve saved recipes, materials, shelves, firings, notes, and glaze-related settings.
  • Create or update recipes and materials, manage shelf contents, add notebook entries, and move records to Trash.

Limitations and notes

Cone and limit guidance follows the ranges and published figures used by Glazecalc. Cone 12 and above use a top band without published limit figures, while some firings and materials fall outside the available comparison rules. Cone 6 versus cone 10 can be distinguished only approximately. A fits result means that nothing in the selected checks points away from the firing; it is not a pass or a guarantee.

Suggested substitutions, solved recipes, blends, and variations should be tested as fired tiles. The calculations do not replace kiln testing, material verification, studio safety procedures, or food-surface evaluation. Tools that change account data require an access token with read-and-change permission, and records should only be altered or removed when the user has requested it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Glazecalc

Glazecalc is an MCP server that connects AI assistants to Glazecalc's ceramic glaze library and account data. Its main tools analyze recipes, calculate unity formulas, check firing limits, convert cones and temperatures, suggest material substitutes, solve and compare recipes, generate blends, search potter guides, and manage saved records with permission.

Connect an MCP-compatible client to Glazecalc's `/mcp` endpoint, then authenticate through Glazecalc's OAuth flow or an access token. OAuth connections can be read-only unless change access is approved; account-editing tools require a token or connection that can read and change records.

Yes, Glazecalc is available to Cursor through its MCP endpoint. Configure Cursor to connect to `/mcp`, then authorize access if you want the assistant to read or change saved recipes, materials, firings, notes, or shelf contents.

Yes, `suggest_substitutes` finds discontinued or scarce materials and proposes modern replacements with amounts intended to keep the unity formula close. The result includes a closeness report, and any suggested recipe should be tested before use.

Yes, `match_from_materials` and `match_with_what_i_have` rebuild a recipe from listed or shelved materials.
