Install Gitlab

Pick your client, then add it in one click or paste the config.

STDIONode.js
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
claude_desktop_config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gitlab": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@pipeworx/mcp-gitlab"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Settings → Developer → Edit Config, merge this into mcpServers, then fully quit and reopen Claude Desktop.

We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-gitlab

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 5d ago.

GitLab MCP — wraps the GitLab REST API v4 (BYO API key)

Part of Pipeworx — an MCP gateway connecting AI agents to 1683+ live data sources.

Tools

ToolDescription
gitlab_list_projectsList all accessible GitLab projects. Returns project ID, name, path, description, star count, and URL. Use gitlab_get_project to fetch detailed info.
gitlab_get_projectGet details for a specific GitLab project (e.g., project ID "123" or path "group/project"). Returns name, description, visibility, stars, forks, and default branch.
gitlab_list_issuesSearch issues in a GitLab project by project ID. Returns issue ID, title, state (open/closed), labels, assignee, and URL. Filter by status and labels.
gitlab_list_mrsList merge requests in a GitLab project by project ID. Returns MR ID, title, state, author, source/target branches, and URL. Filter by state and author.
gitlab_get_fileFetch file content from a GitLab repository by project ID and file path (e.g., "src/main.py"). Returns decoded content, file size, name, and encoding.

Quick Start

Add to your MCP client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.):

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gitlab": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/gitlab/mcp"
    }
  }
}

What this endpoint actually serves

tools/list at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/gitlab/mcp returns the tools in the table above plus the shared Pipeworx meta-tools — ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, remember/recall and the rest of the gateway-wide set. So the tool count you see is larger than this table: a single-pack endpoint currently lists roughly 30 shared tools alongside the pack's own. The connection's initialize response states its exact scope, and is the authoritative answer for a given day.

This is deliberate, not multiplexing by accident. The meta-tools are what let a scoped connection answer a question this pack does not cover — via ask_pipeworx, which routes across the whole catalog — without you adding a second MCP server. There is currently no way to mount a pack endpoint without them; if the extra schemas cost you more context than the routing is worth, connect to the full gateway once rather than to several pack endpoints.

Or connect to the full Pipeworx gateway to get every pack's tools listed directly, instead of just this one's:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pipeworx": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Both URLs reach the same gateway and the same 1683+ data sources. The only difference is which pack's tools are listed directly; ask_pipeworx reaches all of them from either one.

No MCP client? Call it over HTTP

This pack takes your own API key (_apiKey) — we don't front one for it, so there's no curl here that would run without it. Inspect any tool: GET https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/gitlab_list_projects. Find one: POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/search_packs with {"query":"..."}.

Standalone (no gateway account)

This package also runs as a local stdio MCP server — no Pipeworx account, no gateway round-trip:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gitlab": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-gitlab"]
    }
  }
}

Or run it directly to confirm it starts:

Terminal
npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-gitlab

It speaks MCP over stdin/stdout and answers initialize/tools/list/tools/call for only this pack's tools — none of the shared meta-tools the gateway connection above adds. Same source, same tools, no ask_pipeworx routing.

Using with ask_pipeworx

Instead of calling tools directly, you can ask questions in plain English — this works on the pack endpoint above as well as on the full gateway:

Code
ask_pipeworx({ question: "your question about Gitlab data" })

The gateway picks the right tool and fills the arguments automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions about Gitlab

Gitlab is an MCP server that connects MCP clients to the GitLab REST API v4 using your own API key. It provides tools to list and inspect projects, search project issues, list merge requests, and retrieve repository files. It is available through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio server.

The server can list accessible projects, retrieve project details, search issues by project, list merge requests, and fetch repository file contents. Project and issue-related results include fields such as names, descriptions, states, labels, branches, URLs, and other tool-specific metadata.

Yes, the Gitlab pack requires you to provide your own GitLab API key through the gateway tool arguments. Pipeworx does not provide an API key for this pack.

You can connect through the Pipeworx gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/gitlab/mcp or run the standalone package with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-gitlab. The gateway endpoint includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools, while the local stdio server exposes only the Gitlab pack tools.
