What GistPad-MCP MCP server does

GistPad-MCP MCP server gives an MCP client access to a user's GitHub Gists as an editable knowledge store. It covers ordinary gists, their files and comments, and can also expose daily notes, starred gists, archived gists, and reusable prompts when those features are enabled. The project is intended to work alongside the GistPad VS Code extension and GistPad.dev, which provide other ways to access and edit the same gists.

The default tool set supports listing gists, reading a gist by ID, creating and deleting gists, changing descriptions, duplicating gists, and refreshing cached lists. File operations include updating, adding, deleting, renaming, and targeted find-and-replace editing. Comment operations cover listing, adding, editing, and deleting comments.

How it works

The server runs as the gistpad-mcp command and uses a GitHub personal access token supplied through the client configuration. The token should have only the gist scope. Gists are also exposed as MCP resources using the gist:/// URI scheme, so compatible clients can read them without invoking a tool. A comments resource template is available at gist:///{gistId}/comments when the client supports resource templates.

Resource-list changes are reported when a gist is added, deleted, duplicated, or has its description changed. Clients with resource subscription support can subscribe to a gist and receive notifications when it changes. The server caches its gist list, refreshes it after changes made through MCP, and performs an hourly refresh; use refresh_gists after changes made elsewhere if the list is stale.

Setup and configuration

For clients other than the VS Code flow, create a GitHub personal access token with only the gist scope. Add the server to the client's MCP configuration with npx -y gistpad-mcp and set GITHUB_TOKEN to that token.

VS Code users can install the GistPad extension, sign in with GitHub in the GistPad tab, and use GistPad from Copilot chat in Agent mode.

Optional CLI flags extend the default configuration:

  • --daily enables daily-note tools and resources.
  • --starred enables starring tools and starred-gist resources.
  • --archived enables archive tools and archived-gist resources.
  • --prompts enables prompt tools and MCP prompt handlers.
  • --markdown filters gists to those made up of Markdown files.

Tools and capabilities

GistPad-MCP MCP server can maintain daily notes with tools for retrieving or creating today's note, updating it, listing notes, reading a note by date, and deleting one. Starred and archived collections have corresponding list and state-change operations. Prompt support stores parameterized prompts as Markdown files in a 💬 Prompts gist; argument placeholders use the {{argument}} form.

The resource model is useful for clients that prefer reading data through MCP resources. Prompt management and the extra collections are opt-in rather than part of the default tool surface.

Limitations and notes

The server operates on GitHub Gists, so a GitHub account and suitable token are required for the general client setup. Daily notes, starred gists, archived gists, and prompt management are disabled unless their matching flags are passed. The default gist listing excludes daily notes and archived gists. External edits may not appear immediately because of the cache; call refresh_gists when necessary.
