Overview

The gavxm/ani-mcp MCP server connects AI clients to AniList for anime and manga discovery, list management, analytics, and recommendations. It exposes read tools for titles, schedules, staff, characters, studios, user lists, and community recommendations, plus authenticated tools for progress, list, and rating updates. Taste-aware tools use a user's completed or planned titles to explain matches, rank picks, plan sessions, compare users, and identify relevant sequels. What gavxm/ani-mcp MCP server does

The gavxm/ani-mcp MCP server gives an MCP client access to AniList's anime and manga data. It covers title search, detailed metadata, seasonal and trending discovery, genre browsing, community recommendations, airing schedules, staff and voice actor credits, character searches, and studio searches.

User-focused tools work with an AniList username and can inspect lists, check an individual title's status, export list data, calculate statistics, and summarize preferences. Recommendation features include taste profiles, picks from a planning list, similar-title searches, title-to-profile explanations, franchise watch orders, sequel checks, and time-limited session plans. A comparison tool evaluates the tastes of two AniList users, while a year-in-review tool summarizes activity for a selected year.

How it works

The server communicates with AniList through MCP tools. Search and browse requests can use title, genre, year, season, status, and format criteria where supported. Title details can be requested by AniList ID or title, and title-oriented tools return structured fields such as format, score, genres, episodes or chapters, studios, related works, and URLs.

Personalized results depend on AniList list data. Taste analysis uses completed entries, while picks can use planning entries and session planning can use currently watched or read titles. The server can also return ranked recommendations, match scores, genre alignment, mood fit, progress, scores, and airing countdowns depending on the tool.

The gavxm/ani-mcp MCP server supports both the default stdio transport and an HTTP Stream transport selected through configuration. It can be used without an AniList account for public discovery, but account-related and write features need additional configuration.

Setup and configuration

Run the package through an MCP client with npx -y ani-mcp, or install the .mcpb release in Claude Desktop. Claude Code can add it with claude mcp add ani-mcp -- npx -y ani-mcp. Restart the client after changing its configuration.

ANILIST_USERNAME sets the default account for list and statistics tools. A username may also be supplied per call. Set ANILIST_TOKEN for private lists and write operations such as updating progress, adding titles, or rating entries. The token is not needed for public discovery.

Optional settings include ANILIST_TITLE_LANGUAGE (english, romaji, or native), ANILIST_SCORE_FORMAT, and ANILIST_NSFW. ANILIST_MOOD_CONFIG accepts a JSON object for adding or overriding mood keywords. Set MCP_TRANSPORT to http for HTTP Stream; MCP_PORT defaults to 3000, and MCP_HOST defaults to localhost.
