Overview

Football Data MCP server connects AI agents to football-data.org for competition, match, standings, and team data. It provides dedicated MCP tools through a Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package. Use it when an agent needs structured soccer data such as fixtures, league tables, team details, or filtered match results. Authentication can use a Pipeworx platform key or a football-data.org API token.

How Football Data works

What Football Data MCP server does

Football Data MCP server exposes selected football-data.org v4 data through the Model Context Protocol. It covers soccer competitions, matches, standings, and teams. Agents can use the server to discover competitions, retrieve fixtures for a competition or team, inspect standings, and fetch team information.

The available domain tools are list_competitions, get_competition_matches, get_competition_standings, get_team, and get_team_matches. Match queries support filters such as status, date range, matchday, stage, season, venue, and result limits where applicable.

How it works

The hosted option uses the Pipeworx gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/football-data/mcp. The gateway forwards requests to https://api.football-data.org/v4/ and authenticates upstream calls with the X-Auth-Token header. A hosted connection also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools, including ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, and memory-related tools. The exact tool scope is reported by the connection's initialize response.

The same data can be accessed through the full Pipeworx gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp. In either hosted configuration, ask_pipeworx can route a plain-language question to an appropriate catalog tool. Direct HTTP calls are also available through endpoints such as /v1/tools/list_competitions.

For a gateway-free setup, install or run @pipeworx/mcp-football-data with npx. The local process communicates over stdin and stdout and exposes only the football-data tools, without the gateway's shared meta-tools.

Setup and configuration

Add the hosted MCP URL to a compatible client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "football-data": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/football-data/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The hosted gateway accepts the PLATFORM_FOOTBALL_DATA_KEY platform credential. Alternatively, requests can include an API token as ?_apiKey=<token> after registering with football-data.org. The README identifies the upstream free account limit as 10 requests per minute.

For local stdio use, configure the package command:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "football-data": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-football-data"]
    }
  }
}

Tools and capabilities

Football Data MCP server includes these tools:

  • list_competitions() lists available competitions.
  • get_competition_matches(...) retrieves competition matches with optional status, date, matchday, stage, and season filters.
  • get_competition_standings(...) retrieves standings, optionally narrowed by season or matchday.
  • get_team(team_id) retrieves data for a team by ID.
  • get_team_matches(...) retrieves a team's matches with status, date, venue, season, and limit filters.

Limitations and notes

The hosted endpoint lists more tools than the five football-specific tools because shared Pipeworx meta-tools are included. The local package does not include those shared tools. The project is licensed under MIT.
