Overview

The Fmp MCP server connects AI agents to Financial Modeling Prep's API for company profiles, quotes, financial statements, ratios, valuation data, market events, and ownership records. It can run as a local stdio package or through Pipeworx's remote MCP gateway, with HTTP tool calls also available without an MCP client. Use it for agent workflows that need structured public-market data, but note that the provided source uses the Financial Modeling Prep v3 API, which is marked deprecated as of 2025-08-31.

How Fmp works

What Fmp MCP server does

The Fmp MCP server exposes Financial Modeling Prep data as MCP tools for researching publicly traded companies and market activity. It covers company profiles, current and historical prices, intraday quotes, income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, ratios, enterprise value, key metrics, and growth rates.

Reference and event tools support ticker searches, symbol lists, stock screening, company news, earnings calendars, economic calendars, IPOs, mergers, and delisted companies. Ownership-related tools return insider trading records, institutional holders, and ETF holders. The Fmp MCP server is suited to agents that need to look up or compare financial data by symbol, date, period, exchange, or screening criteria.

How it works

The package uses Financial Modeling Prep's API at https://financialmodelingprep.com/api/v3. It can be connected remotely at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/fmp/mcp, where the gateway lists the FMP tools together with shared Pipeworx tools. Those shared tools include routing and discovery functions such as ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, and search_within; the exact tool scope is reported by the connection's initialize response.

A full Pipeworx gateway connection is also available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp. Both gateway URLs can reach the wider Pipeworx catalog through ask_pipeworx, while the FMP endpoint directly lists the FMP pack's tools alongside the shared gateway tools.

The standalone Fmp MCP server runs locally over standard input and output. In that mode, it exposes only the FMP pack's tools and does not provide Pipeworx's shared meta-tools or cross-catalog routing.

Setup and configuration

For a remote MCP connection, add the FMP gateway URL to an MCP client's server configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fmp": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/fmp/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The README names Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf as client options. For local use, configure the package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fmp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-fmp"]
    }
  }
}

Authentication uses PLATFORM_FMP_KEY through the platform, or an API key supplied with the ?_apiKey=... parameter for a bring-your-own-key request.

Tools and capabilities

The Fmp MCP server includes tools for:

  • Profiles, current quotes, short quotes, historical prices, and intraday intervals.
  • Annual or quarterly income statements, balance sheets, cash flow, ratios, enterprise value, key metrics, and growth.
  • Symbol and ticker search, full symbol listings, and filters for market capitalization, sector, industry, country, exchange, dividends, beta, volume, ETF status, and trading status.
  • Stock news, earnings, economic events, IPOs, mergers, and delisted companies.
  • Insider trading, institutional-holder, and ETF-holder data.

Tools accept parameters such as symbols, date ranges, periods, result limits, pages, exchanges, and screening thresholds where supported.

Limitations and notes

The provided source is the Financial Modeling Prep v3 API, and the listing notes that v3 was deprecated on 2025-08-31. Review the upstream API status before depending on this server for a new production workflow. Financial Modeling Prep's free allowance is listed as 250 requests per day.

Gateway connections include shared Pipeworx schemas in addition to the pack tools, which increases the visible tool count. Use the standalone package when only the FMP tools are wanted and no gateway routing is needed. HTTP clients can also call tools directly, such as POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/fmp_profile with a JSON symbol argument.
