What FlowLeap Patent AI MCP server does
The FlowLeap Patent AI MCP server exposes 51 read-only tools for patent research and analysis. It does not write to patent-office systems, modify records, or create files. The hosted endpoint is https://api.flowleap.co/mcp, using Streamable HTTP rather than a local process.
EPO tools cover worldwide document data, including bibliographic details, abstracts, claims, descriptions, families, legal-status events, register events, citations, drawings, and patent-number conversion. USPTO tools provide grant and application file wrappers, continuity, transactions, assignments, foreign priority, patent-term adjustment, attorney details, customer-number portfolio searches, and IFW documents.
Additional tools search examiner-cited prior art, enriched citations, academic literature, non-patent literature, patent-law references, and worldwide patent trends. PATSTAT tools cover applicant and technology portfolios, patent relationships, citation and family neighborhoods, graph paths, CPC lookups, applicant resolution, and read-only SQL over documented views.
How it works
The FlowLeap Patent AI MCP server is a remote MCP endpoint that an MCP client connects to over HTTP. On first use, the client opens FlowLeap sign-in. OAuth 2.1 grants the patent-data scope after the user authenticates.
The server also provides six MCP resources and three MCP prompts for PATSTAT reference material and workflows. Some tools combine several reads, such as patent summaries, side-by-side comparisons, prosecution timelines, estimated terms, and family-wide examiner-citation baselines. A utility tool reports configured providers and available tools.
Setup and configuration
Add the endpoint URL to an MCP-compatible client and complete the FlowLeap sign-in flow. The documented configurations include HTTP entries for Cursor, Claude Code, VS Code, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, and Zed, as well as custom connectors for Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude mobile apps, and ChatGPT.
Clients without OAuth support can send a FlowLeap personal token as a bearer header. Tokens are created with flowleap auth create-token and provide the same access as OAuth sign-in. The office-data tools also require office credentials supplied through a Patent-Data Key: an EPO OPS consumer key and secret, or a USPTO ODP API key. The provided material does not specify the corresponding environment-variable names.
Tools and capabilities
The FlowLeap Patent AI MCP server includes tools for:
- Searching EPO worldwide or USPTO US patent data with provider-specific syntax.
- Reading patent text, images, families, legal events, prosecution records, and citations.
- Running OCR on PDFs, images, and office documents.
- Searching EPC, EPO Guidelines, MPEP, and other supported legal references.
- Reviewing PATSTAT portfolios, technologies, applicants, citations, families, and graph paths.
- Running one guarded, read-only SQL
SELECT against documented PATSTAT views.
Limitations and notes
All listed tools are read-only. Results depend on the configured EPO OPS, USPTO ODP, academic, non-patent-literature, and PATSTAT providers. The live tool list is the authoritative reference because the grouped inventory can change. A personal token is an alternative only for clients that cannot complete OAuth; it does not expand access beyond the OAuth account.
