Overview

The Finnhub MCP server connects AI agents to Finnhub's REST API for market data including quotes, company fundamentals, earnings, news, insider transactions, sentiment, ETF holdings, economic data, crypto, and forex. It can run as a hosted MCP endpoint through Pipeworx or locally over stdio with the `@pipeworx/mcp-finnhub` package. Use it for finance research that combines price data with news, earnings, insider activity, or international market coverage. A Finnhub API key is passed as `_apiKey`, and the free tier allows 60 API calls per minute.

How Finnhub works

What Finnhub MCP server does

The Finnhub MCP server exposes Finnhub's REST API to MCP-compatible AI clients. Its data coverage includes stock quotes, company fundamentals, earnings calendars and history, analyst estimates, company news, news sentiment, insider transactions, ETF holdings, economic data, cryptocurrency, and forex.

It is suited to research workflows that need more than a single price lookup. An agent can combine a ticker's current or delayed quote with recent news, earnings information, or insider filings. Finnhub also covers European, Asian, and emerging-market symbols, although international symbols may require exchange suffixes such as NESN.SW.

How it works

The package is available in two forms. A hosted endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/finnhub/mcp provides the Finnhub pack through Pipeworx. The same gateway also offers a full endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp; either endpoint can use the gateway's ask_pipeworx routing capability.

The hosted pack endpoint lists its Finnhub tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools. The local package exposes only the Finnhub tools over stdin and stdout, without the gateway's shared routing tools. Clients communicate using MCP operations such as initialize, tools/list, and tools/call.

For applications that do not use an MCP client, Pipeworx also documents HTTP access to individual tools. A request can include the caller's Finnhub key as _apiKey.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the endpoint to an MCP client configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "finnhub": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/finnhub/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For a standalone local server, use the published npm package:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "finnhub": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-finnhub"]
    }
  }
}

Create a free API key through the Finnhub dashboard and pass it in the _apiKey argument when calling tools. The free plan permits 60 API calls per minute. Paid plans provide live data, longer historical access, and higher rate limits.

Tools and capabilities

The Finnhub MCP server supports workflows involving:

  • Real-time or delayed stock quotes
  • Company news with sentiment scoring
  • Insider transactions from Form 4 filings
  • Upcoming earnings, historical surprises, and EPS estimates
  • Company fundamentals and analyst estimates
  • ETF holdings
  • Economic indicators
  • Cryptocurrency and foreign-exchange data
  • International ticker lookup and market coverage

The gateway's ask_pipeworx meta-tool can accept a natural-language question and select a suitable tool across the Pipeworx catalog. Direct tool calls are more appropriate when an application needs explicit control over arguments and data sources.

Limitations and notes

Rate limits and coverage should be checked before building production workflows around frequent requests.

Finnhub's news sentiment is an NLP-derived signal, so it should not be treated as ground truth. Insider records can arrive after the transaction because Form 4 filings generally have a reporting window of up to two business days. Analyst estimates must also be kept distinct from reported actuals in analysis and charts.

Some smaller-cap and OTC securities may have limited free-tier coverage. Verify that the required symbols return data before depending on them. International symbols often need an exchange suffix, and Finnhub's symbol search can help identify the correct format.

Frequently Asked Questions about Finnhub

Finnhub is an MCP server that connects AI agents to the Finnhub REST API. Its main tools provide stock quotes, company fundamentals, earnings data, news and sentiment, insider transactions, ETF holdings, economic indicators, cryptocurrency, and forex data for finance research workflows.

Install it locally by configuring an MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-finnhub`. The package communicates over stdin and stdout and exposes only the Finnhub pack's tools. You can instead connect to the hosted Pipeworx endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/finnhub/mcp`.

Pass your Finnhub API key as the `_apiKey` argument when calling a tool. You can obtain a free key from the Finnhub dashboard. The documented free tier allows 60 API calls per minute, while paid tiers add live data, longer history, and higher limits.

Yes, Cursor is named as a supported MCP client in the setup instructions. Add the hosted Finnhub endpoint to Cursor's MCP configuration, or configure the local `npx` command for a standalone stdio connection.

Not fully. The free plan may provide current or approximately current quotes but can apply a delay, while paid tiers provide actual live data. The README recommends the free tier for research and paid access for trading-related use.
