Overview

The filekiwi-mcp-server MCP server connects an MCP-compatible assistant to file.kiwi for file uploads. Its upload_to_kiwi tool accepts a local path and returns a shareable download URL, using the file.kiwi API without requiring a browser or API key. It supports large files with no stated size limit and provides links while uploads are still progressing. Use it when an agent needs to publish local files for download, provided the client can access the relevant filesystem paths.

Use cases

  • Share a local report as a download link
  • Upload an image from a filesystem path
  • Generate a temporary link for a presentation
  • Publish large files without opening a browser

Key features

  • Uploads files with the upload_to_kiwi tool
  • Returns shareable file.kiwi URLs
  • Uses encrypted uploads through the file.kiwi API
  • Requires no API key or authentication
  • Runs through Node.js without a browser
  • Supports files of any stated size

How Filekiwi MCP Server works

What filekiwi-mcp-server does

The filekiwi-mcp-server MCP server gives an AI assistant a way to upload a local file to file.kiwi and receive a downloadable link. The interaction is based on a file path: the assistant identifies the path, the server sends the file through the file.kiwi API, and the resulting URL is returned to the conversation.

The generated link includes a secret fragment, using a format such as https://file.kiwi/abcdef12#secretKey. file.kiwi handles the hosted download, while the server provides the link to the MCP client.

How it works

The server runs as a Node.js process and communicates with an MCP client. A client can start it through npx, so a separate browser session is not needed. After receiving a path, upload_to_kiwi uploads the file and returns a shareable URL.

Download access is available immediately, including while the upload is still in progress. Files are automatically removed after 90 hours, and file.kiwi provides a free download period for each file.

Setup and configuration

A quick test can be run with the package command below:

Terminal
npx -y @file-kiwi/filekiwi-mcp-server "/path/to/file.ext"

For Claude Code, register the server with:

Terminal
claude mcp add filekiwi -- npx -y @file-kiwi/filekiwi-mcp-server

Other MCP clients can use a stdio configuration with npx as the command and -y @file-kiwi/filekiwi-mcp-server as its arguments.

The client must be able to read the local path supplied to the tool. Some environments, including Claude Desktop, may restrict local filesystem access. In those cases, the README recommends adding the filesystem MCP server and granting it access to the directory containing the files.

Tools and capabilities

The filekiwi-mcp-server MCP server exposes one documented tool:

  • upload_to_kiwi: uploads a local file to file.kiwi and returns a shareable download URL.

Supported capabilities include encrypted uploads through the file.kiwi API, operation without a browser, immediate link availability, and uploads with no stated file-size limit. The tool is suitable for requests such as sharing a report, publishing an image, or generating a download link for a presentation.

Limitations and notes

The server depends on the MCP client having access to the requested local file. Installing the server alone does not bypass operating-system or client filesystem restrictions. Configure a filesystem MCP server when the client cannot read the target directory.

The free download period and other retention details are controlled by file.kiwi; consult its API documentation for current service terms.

Frequently Asked Questions about Filekiwi MCP Server

filekiwi-mcp-server is an MCP server that connects AI assistants to the file.kiwi API for encrypted file uploads. Its main tool, upload_to_kiwi, accepts a local file path and returns a shareable download URL, allowing agents to publish files without opening a browser or managing a separate upload workflow.

Install it by registering `npx -y @file-kiwi/filekiwi-mcp-server` in your MCP client configuration. Claude Code can use `claude mcp add filekiwi -- npx -y @file-kiwi/filekiwi-mcp-server`; other clients can use the equivalent stdio configuration.

If Cursor supports that MCP transport and can access the target files, configure it with the package command and use `upload_to_kiwi`.

The MCP client may not have filesystem access to the requested path. Some environments, including Claude Desktop, restrict local files by default; add the filesystem MCP server and grant it access to the directory containing the file.
