Overview

Eurostat MCP server connects AI agents to the official Eurostat Statistical Data API and catalogue without requiring authentication. It can search roughly 10,000 datasets, list curated dataset codes, and retrieve observations filtered by geography and time. Use the hosted gateway for HTTP access or run the package locally over stdio when you want only Eurostat tools.

Use cases

  • Search Eurostat's catalogue for datasets matching a topic
  • Retrieve country-level economic or labour statistics
  • Filter observations by year, month, or quarter
  • Build agent workflows around official EU statistics

Key features

  • Searches approximately 10,000 Eurostat datasets and tables
  • Retrieves observations with geography and time filters
  • Lists curated dataset codes by theme
  • Supports hosted HTTP and local stdio deployment
  • Requires no authentication

How Eurostat works

What Eurostat MCP server does

Eurostat exposes official European Union statistics covering areas such as the economy, prices, labour, population, migration, trade, energy, environment, and tourism. The package provides MCP access to Eurostat's statistical data endpoint and dataset catalogue, so an MCP-compatible agent can identify a dataset and then retrieve its observations.

The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by Eurostat. No authentication is required for the Eurostat API or for the initial gateway calls.

How it works

The hosted connection is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/eurostat/mcp. A client can use this URL as an MCP server and call the Eurostat-specific tools through the Pipeworx gateway. The same gateway also exposes shared Pipeworx tools, including routing and discovery functions. Consequently, a gateway connection may list more tools than the Eurostat-specific set.

A local installation uses the npm package @pipeworx/mcp-eurostat and communicates over standard input and output. In local mode, the server exposes only the Eurostat pack's tools and does not include the gateway's shared meta-tools. Both modes use the same underlying Eurostat data sources.

Eurostat observations come from the dissemination API, with filters passed as query parameters. Dataset discovery uses Eurostat's table-of-contents TSV, which is cached at the edge for six hours and filtered by the integration.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the following MCP server entry:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "eurostat": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/eurostat/mcp"
    }
  }
}

To run the standalone server locally, configure an MCP client to invoke the package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "eurostat": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-eurostat"]
    }
  }
}

The package can also be started directly with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-eurostat. No Pipeworx account is needed for the standalone mode.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets(query) searches the full Eurostat table of contents and returns dataset codes. The catalogue contains approximately 10,000 datasets and tables.
  • list_datasets() returns a curated collection of about 19 frequently used dataset codes organized by theme.
  • get_dataset(dataset_code, geo?, time?) retrieves observations for a selected dataset. geo can restrict results to a geography, while time can specify a year, month, or quarter.

Supported time examples include 2023, 2023-01, and 2023-Q1. Compact forms such as 2023M01 and 2023Q1 are normalized automatically. For example, a request can retrieve unemployment data for Germany in June 2025 using dataset code une_rt_m, geography DE, and time 2025-06.

The gateway also supports natural-language requests through ask_pipeworx, which can select a tool and populate its arguments. Direct HTTP tool calls are available through the gateway's /v1/tools/ endpoints.

Limitations and notes

The hosted pack endpoint necessarily includes shared gateway tools alongside the Eurostat tools. If you need a smaller tool surface, use the local stdio package. Alternatively, the full Pipeworx gateway exposes all connected packs directly.

Results depend on the Eurostat dissemination API and catalogue. Dataset codes must be identified before retrieval unless a known code is supplied. The integration is an unofficial wrapper around Eurostat rather than an upstream Eurostat publication.

Frequently Asked Questions about Eurostat

Eurostat is an MCP server that connects AI agents to the official Eurostat Statistical Data API and catalogue. Its main tools search datasets, list curated dataset codes, and retrieve observations with optional geography and time filters. It requires no authentication and can run through Pipeworx or locally over stdio.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-eurostat` with the package as the command argument. You can also connect to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/eurostat/mcp` without a local installation.

Yes, Eurostat works with Cursor through the hosted MCP URL or the local stdio configuration. Add the server under Cursor's MCP settings using the gateway URL, or invoke `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-eurostat` as the local command.

Call `search_datasets(query)` to search Eurostat's table of contents, or use `list_datasets()` for a curated set of popular codes. Pass the resulting code to `get_dataset` to retrieve observations.

No, authentication is not required. The hosted gateway does not require an account for the first calls, and the standalone package runs locally without a Pipeworx account.
