How Estevao MCP works

What estevao-mcp MCP server does

The estevao-mcp MCP server connects MCP clients to the Estêvão API, the liturgical engine used by the Ordo app. It provides factual Anglican calendar and worship data rather than generating sermons, homilies, or devotional reflections.

Date-oriented requests accept an ISO date such as 2026-10-08, as well as today and next-sunday. Tools are read-only. A prayer book can be supplied to date-scoped tools; the default is loc_2015, and the current catalogue is obtained through list_prayer_books rather than being fixed in the MCP package.

Tools and capabilities

The estevao-mcp MCP server includes tools for both routine lookup and detailed explanation:

  • Retrieve the liturgical day, monthly calendar, yearly structure, readings, and Sunday or weekday lectionary cycle.
  • Assemble the complete morning, midday, evening, and Compline offices as Markdown or structured JSON.
  • Search or filter celebrations, then inspect a celebration's transfer rules, calculation, collects, and readings.
  • List supported prayer books and Bible versions, inspect each book's accepted preferences, and compare two to four books for the same day or office.
  • Explain how precedence, transfers, color, and reading selection determined a particular liturgical day.

Resources include current-day data, date-specific day and explanation templates, office content, prayer book information, Bible versions, and yearly key dates. Factual prompts are also available for building a liturgy sheet, explaining a feast or decision, and comparing traditions.

Setup and configuration

For local stdio use, install or run the package through npx and provide ESTEVAO_API_KEY, whose value starts with estevao_. A Claude configuration can define estevao with npx -y estevao-mcp as the command and the key in its environment. ESTEVAO_BASE_URL can point the server at a local or staging API instead of the default endpoint.

The hosted deployment is available at https://mcp.caminhoanglicano.com.br/mcp over Streamable HTTP. Its documented Claude Code and Codex CLI commands use browser sign-in with Google or email, so the user does not manage an Estêvão API key. The remote deployment uses OAuth; a self-hosted OAuth setup requires public URL, encryption, Firebase, and usually database configuration.

ESTEVAO_DEFAULT_PRAYER_BOOK changes the default book, ESTEVAO_TIMEZONE controls resolution of today, and ESTEVAO_LANGUAGE sets default generated label language. Liturgical content remains in the language of the selected prayer book. Per-book preferences can control options such as psalm translation, canticles, cycles, and office variants; clients should query get_prayer_book_preferences before sending them.
