How Espn works

What Espn MCP server does

Espn MCP server connects MCP-compatible clients to sports data from ESPN's public site API. It covers NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, soccer, and college sports, with tools for current and recent games, league structure, news, standings, schedules, and game details. The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by ESPN.

The server is useful for sports assistants, dashboards, research workflows, and agents that need structured data instead of manually searching sports pages. It does not require an ESPN API key.

How it works

You can use the hosted Pipeworx endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/espn/mcp, which exposes the ESPN-related tools through MCP. The endpoint also lists shared Pipeworx meta-tools, so its tool list is larger than the six sports tools described here. The full gateway is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp when an agent needs direct access to all Pipeworx data sources.

For a local connection, run @pipeworx/mcp-espn with npx. The package communicates over standard input and output and exposes only the ESPN pack's tools. A client can also call individual tools through the gateway's HTTP API, such as the get_scoreboard endpoint.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted MCP connection, add the following URL to the client configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "espn": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/espn/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio use, configure the package as the command and pass -y with @pipeworx/mcp-espn:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "espn": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-espn"]
    }
  }
}

It states that the initial gateway calls do not require an account. No environment variables are documented.

Tools and capabilities

  • get_scoreboard returns today's games and results with teams, scores, game status, clock, and period.
  • get_teams lists league teams with names, abbreviations, locations, and colors.
  • get_news returns current league headlines, summaries, and links.
  • get_standings provides records, winning percentage, games behind, and soccer points or draws, organized by conference or division.
  • get_team_schedule returns upcoming and recent games, including opponents, dates, and completed-game scores and results. Use get_teams first to obtain the numeric team_id.
  • get_game_summary provides box-score player statistics, ordered scoring plays, and leaders for completed or in-progress games. Obtain the numeric event_id from get_scoreboard or get_team_schedule.

Limitations and notes

The Espn MCP server relies on ESPN's public site API, and the repository describes the integration as unofficial. Hosted pack endpoints include Pipeworx shared meta-tools in addition to the listed sports tools; the local package does not. Tool results depend on the sports and league data available through that public source.

Frequently Asked Questions about Espn

Espn is an MCP server that connects AI clients to ESPN's public site API through Pipeworx. Its main tools retrieve scoreboards, teams, news, standings, team schedules, and game summaries. It supports major leagues across football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, and college sports without requiring an ESPN API key.

Install it locally by configuring `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-espn` as an MCP stdio server. The package runs without a Pipeworx account and communicates over stdin and stdout. You can instead connect an MCP client to the hosted URL `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/espn/mcp`.

Yes, Espn works with Cursor through the hosted MCP URL or the local stdio configuration. Add the server under the `mcpServers` configuration with either `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/espn/mcp` or the `npx` command and package arguments.

Call `get_game_summary` to retrieve player statistics, scoring plays, and game leaders for a completed or in-progress game. First obtain the numeric `event_id` from `get_scoreboard` or `get_team_schedule`, then pass that identifier to the game summary tool.
