Overview

The esim-mcp MCP server lets MCP clients query CheapereSIM for travel eSIM destinations, plans, coverage, and multi-country pricing. It runs over stdio through npx and provides five lookup tools without an account, while two account tools become available when a bearer token is configured. Reach for it when an agent needs current plan options, regional-versus-local comparisons, or usage details for existing eSIMs. It returns read-only results and purchase links rather than buying plans.

Use cases

  • Compare local and regional eSIM prices for a multi-country itinerary
  • Find the cheapest available plan for a destination
  • Check which countries a regional eSIM covers
  • Review remaining data on a configured eSIM account

Key features

  • Country and partial-name destination search
  • Plans sorted by price
  • Multi-country trip pricing
  • Regional and global coverage lookup
  • Account eSIM and usage queries
  • Read-only CheapereSIM purchase links

How Esim MCP works

What esim-mcp MCP server does

The esim-mcp MCP server connects an MCP client to CheapereSIM travel eSIM data. It can find supported destinations, return plans for a country, compare local and regional options across an itinerary, inspect the countries covered by a regional or global plan, and show frequently purchased destinations.

With a configured CheapereSIM account token, it also exposes account-level lookups. These tools list the account's eSIMs and report the remaining data for a selected eSIM. The server does not purchase plans, modify account details, or delete accounts.

Coverage includes more than 190 destinations across eight regions, along with regional and global plans. Results use CheapereSIM pricing and include the purchase URL returned by the service.

How it works

The server communicates with MCP clients over stdio. A client can invoke the tools directly or translate natural-language requests into calls such as finding plans for Japan, checking whether one plan covers several countries, or comparing a regional plan with separate local plans.

plan_trip is intended for itineraries spanning multiple countries. It evaluates available regional coverage and country-specific plans, then reports the alternatives and pricing. A lower total for local plans does not necessarily cover every requested destination, so the result also identifies uncovered countries.

The first five tools work without credentials. Account tools are registered only when CHEAPERESIM_API_TOKEN is present, preventing clients from exposing operations that cannot run in the current configuration.

Setup and configuration

Run the published package through an MCP client's stdio configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "esim": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "esim-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

No API key or CheapereSIM account is needed for destination and plan lookups. Set CHEAPERESIM_API_TOKEN to enable list_my_esims and get_esim_usage; tokens can be created from the CheapereSIM API-token dashboard and are read-only.

CHEAPERESIM_API_BASE defaults to https://cheaperesim.com and can point to another API base. CHEAPERESIM_TIMEOUT_MS controls request timeout and defaults to 10,000 milliseconds. Keep an API-base override on HTTPS because the token is sent as a bearer header.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_destinations finds supported countries by full or partial name.
  • list_plans returns plans for one country, ordered from lowest price upward.
  • plan_trip compares ways to stay connected across several countries.
  • get_plan_coverage lists destinations included in a regional or global plan.
  • list_popular_destinations returns commonly purchased destinations.
  • list_my_esims lists eSIMs on the configured CheapereSIM account.
  • get_esim_usage reports remaining data for one account eSIM.

The first five tools are available in read-only lookup mode without a token. The final two require the token. All returned plans are for evaluation and purchase through CheapereSIM's links; the server itself does not complete checkout.

Limitations and notes

The esim-mcp MCP server provides CheapereSIM data and pricing, not a general comparison across other eSIM sellers. Account operations are limited to listing eSIMs and checking usage. A token cannot be used to buy a plan, change a profile, or delete an account.

Plan availability and prices come from the service at request time. For an itinerary, review both the total price and destination coverage before choosing between local and regional plans. Treat the API token like a password and revoke it if it is exposed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Esim MCP

esim-mcp is an MCP server that connects AI clients to CheapereSIM travel eSIM pricing and account data. Its main tools search destinations, list plans, compare multi-country trip options, inspect regional coverage, list popular destinations, list account eSIMs, and report remaining data usage.

Install it by adding an npx stdio entry using the package name `esim-mcp` to your MCP client configuration. No API key or account is needed for destination and plan searches; add `CHEAPERESIM_API_TOKEN` only for account eSIM and usage tools.

Yes, esim-mcp works with Cursor because it communicates over stdio using the Model Context Protocol. The README also identifies Claude and custom MCP clients as supported, provided the client can run a standard stdio MCP server.

No, it cannot buy an eSIM. The tools are read-only and return CheapereSIM plan information with purchase links; checkout takes place separately on CheapereSIM.

Set `CHEAPERESIM_API_TOKEN` and call `get_esim_usage` for the selected eSIM. The token enables the account tools, including `list_my_esims`, which can help identify the eSIM before checking its remaining data.
