We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-entur

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 15d ago.

Overview

The Entur MCP server connects AI agents to Norway’s national public-transport data through tools for live departures, stop lookup, and journey planning. It can search stops and places, retrieve realtime rail, bus, tram, metro, and ferry departures, and build itineraries between locations. Use it for travel assistants or applications that need nationwide Norwegian transit information. It is available as a hosted MCP endpoint, HTTP tool API, or local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Check live departures from a Norwegian stop
  • Plan a public-transport trip between two places in Norway
  • Find an official stop ID for a station or ferry quay
  • Build travel assistants for Norwegian rail and local transit

Key features

  • Realtime departures across Norwegian transport modes
  • Door-to-door journey planning
  • National stop and place search
  • NSR IDs, coordinates, and transport metadata
  • Hosted HTTP and local stdio access

How Entur works

What the Entur MCP server does

The Entur MCP server exposes Norway-wide public-transport information for use by MCP-compatible AI clients and applications. Its data covers trains, trams, metros, buses, and ferries, including services associated with operators such as Vy, Flytoget, Ruter, Skyss, and AtB.

The server supports three main tasks: finding stops and places, checking current departures, and planning journeys. Results can include official stop names, NSR identifiers, locations, transport categories, coordinates, departure platforms or quays, realtime status, itinerary legs, operators, transfer counts, duration, and walking distance.

How it works

A client can connect to the hosted streamable HTTP endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/entur/mcp, or run the package locally over standard input and output. The hosted route is part of the Pipeworx gateway. It lists the Entur tools along with shared gateway tools, while the local package exposes only the Entur tool set.

The hosted endpoint can also reach other Pipeworx data sources through ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, and memory-related tools such as remember and recall. These shared tools are added by the gateway and are not part of the standalone package. A full gateway connection is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp when an application needs the broader catalog listed directly.

The Entur MCP server can also be called without an MCP client through the gateway’s HTTP tool interface, such as POST /v1/tools/entur_departures with a JSON request body.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the Entur endpoint as an MCP server in a compatible client.

For local use, configure the client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-entur, or execute that command directly to start the stdio server. This mode does not require a Pipeworx account or gateway round trip. No environment variables or additional configuration values are documented as required.

Tools and capabilities

  • entur_stops_search finds stops, stations, ferry quays, and places by name. Its results include an NSR ID that can be used with the other Entur tools.
  • entur_departures returns departure-board information for a Norwegian stop, including aimed and expected times, delay minutes, line, destination, platform or quay, and whether the result is realtime.
  • entur_journey creates door-to-door public-transport itineraries between two Norwegian locations. It reports legs, modes, lines, operators, planned and expected times, total duration, transfers, and walking distance.

Limitations and notes

The hosted pack endpoint includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the three Entur tools, so its reported tool count can exceed the transport-specific list. The exact scope is provided by the connection’s initialize response and may change.

The standalone package exposes only the Entur tools and does not provide ask_pipeworx routing.

Frequently Asked Questions about Entur

Entur is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Norway’s national public-transport data. Its main tools search stops and places, retrieve realtime departures, and plan journeys between locations. Coverage includes trains, buses, trams, metros, and ferries, with itinerary, operator, timing, and stop metadata in tool results.

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-entur` as a local stdio server, or configure an MCP client to use `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/entur/mcp`. The local option requires no Pipeworx account. The hosted endpoint is configured as a URL-based MCP server.

Yes, Entur works with Cursor through the hosted MCP endpoint. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/entur/mcp` to Cursor’s MCP server configuration.

Call `entur_stops_search` with a place or stop name, such as `Trondheim`. The tool returns the official name, NSR ID, locality, categories, transport modes, and coordinates. Use the returned NSR ID with the departures and journey tools.

Yes, call the hosted gateway over HTTP. For example, send a POST request to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/entur_departures` with a JSON body such as `{"stop":"Oslo S"}`.
