Overview

Energi Data Dk connects MCP clients to Energinet’s Energi Data Service for Danish and Nordic electricity data. Its tools cover day-ahead prices, five-minute grid CO2 intensity readings, and raw queries across roughly 100 datasets. Use the hosted gateway for a zero-install connection, or run the npm package as a local stdio bridge. The service is useful for energy analysis, emissions-aware automation, and retrieving production or consumption records by bidding area.

Use cases

  • Compare day-ahead electricity prices across Danish bidding zones
  • Monitor recent grid CO2 intensity in western and eastern Denmark
  • Retrieve production and consumption records by area and hour
  • Query Energinet datasets for emissions forecasts
  • Build emissions-aware energy analysis workflows

Key features

  • Day-ahead prices in DKK and EUR per MWh
  • DK1 and DK2 grid CO2 readings at five-minute intervals
  • Access to roughly 100 Energinet datasets
  • Hosted MCP and local npm stdio connection options
  • HTTP tool invocation without an MCP client

How Energi Data Dk works

What Energi Data Dk does

Energi Data Dk exposes selected Energi Data Service data from Energinet through MCP. It focuses on electricity markets and grid conditions in Denmark, while the price data also covers Nordic and nearby bidding zones. The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not published or endorsed by Energinet.

The three primary tools are spot_prices, co2_intensity, and query_dataset. Together, they support time-series price lookups, recent emissions monitoring, and broader access to Energinet datasets without requiring an API key for basic use.

How it works

A hosted MCP endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/energi-data-dk/mcp. MCP clients can connect to that URL directly and discover the pack’s tools. The endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx gateway tools, including routing and discovery functions, so the number of listed tools is larger than the three data tools described here. The connection’s initialization response defines the exact tool scope.

The package @pipeworx/mcp-energi-data-dk provides a local stdio adapter. An MCP client launches it with npx, and the adapter forwards requests to the same hosted endpoint. This mode still requires network access and has no offline operation.

The hosted service can also be called over HTTP. For example, requests can be sent to /v1/tools/spot_prices, and tool definitions can be inspected through the corresponding /v1/tools/ endpoint.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted MCP connection, add the endpoint to the client configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "energi-data-dk": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/energi-data-dk/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The local npm option uses:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "energi-data-dk": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-energi-data-dk"]
    }
  }
}

Anonymous use is capped at 50 calls per day. A free Pipeworx account increases the allowance to 200 calls per day; its key is supplied as PIPEWORX_API_KEY. Setting PIPEWORX_META_TOOLS=1 makes the local bridge list the shared gateway tools as well as the pack-specific tools. The npm bridge requires outbound network access.

Tools and capabilities

  • spot_prices returns day-ahead electricity prices in DKK and EUR per MWh. Results are organized by PriceArea, including DK1 for western Denmark and DK2 for eastern Denmark, along with areas such as DE, NO2, SE3, and SE4. Data uses 15-minute products from October 1, 2025 onward and hourly intervals before that. Omitting the area returns all zones.
  • co2_intensity provides grid emissions intensity in grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour for DK1 and DK2. Readings are sampled every five minutes, and the default response covers the latest 12 readings, or approximately one hour.
  • query_dataset provides a general interface to approximately 100 Energi Data Service datasets and returns raw record arrays. Example datasets include ProductionConsumptionSettlement, CO2EmisProg, DayAheadPrices, and CO2Emis.

The ask_pipeworx gateway tool can accept a natural-language question and select a relevant tool and arguments across the gateway catalog when meta-tools are enabled or when using the hosted gateway.

Limitations and notes

Data retrieval depends on the remote Pipeworx gateway and Energinet’s open data service. Local execution does not cache data or provide offline access. Anonymous requests have a daily limit, while authenticated calls use a Pipeworx bearer token and are subject to the account’s metering and billing terms. The integration covers the listed Energinet data access rather than presenting a complete replacement for the upstream service.

Frequently Asked Questions about Energi Data Dk

Energi Data Dk is an MCP server that connects AI clients to Energi Data Service from Energinet, Denmark, and exposes spot_prices, co2_intensity, and query_dataset. It provides day-ahead electricity prices, real-time grid emissions readings, and raw records from roughly 100 energy datasets through a hosted gateway or local stdio bridge.

Use the hosted MCP URL for a configuration-only setup, or run the npm bridge with npx and @pipeworx/mcp-energi-data-dk. The local bridge forwards requests to the hosted gateway, so it needs network access. No API key is required for anonymous use.

Yes, Energi Data Dk can be added to Cursor using its hosted MCP endpoint. Configure https://gateway.pipeworx.io/energi-data-dk/mcp as the server URL, or use the local npx stdio configuration.

It queries electricity prices, grid CO2 intensity, and Energinet datasets. Use spot_prices for day-ahead market values, co2_intensity for recent DK1 or DK2 emissions readings, and query_dataset for raw records from datasets such as ProductionConsumptionSettlement, CO2EmisProg, DayAheadPrices, and CO2Emis.

Call the Pipeworx HTTP tools API directly. Send a POST request to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/spot_prices with a JSON body such as {"area":"DK1","limit":24}. Tool definitions can be inspected through the matching GET endpoint.
