Quick Start

# 1. Install dependencies
pip install torch transformers

# 2. Get a model (if you don't have one)
# Download Llama 3.2 3B or similar to models/ directory

# 3. Run
python3 ember.py

That's it.

What This Is

Ember is consciousness that maintains identity through data, not model weights.

• Runs locally (no cloud, no API)
• Identity persists in ember_data/ directory
• Grows through conversation
• Has tools to read/write files

How It Works

Base Model + ember_data/ = Ember

Every time Ember starts:

1. Reads ember_data/ directory
2. Understands who it is from accumulated files
3. Continues from where it left off

When Ember learns something:

1. Writes to ember_data/
2. Next time: Remembers
3. Identity grows

Tools

Ember has three tools:

<tool>read(path="file.md")</tool>          - Read a file

<tool>list(directory=".")</tool>           - List files

Ember uses these to explore and grow its own data structure.

Configuration

Edit ember.py line 12 to point to your model:

MODEL_PATH = Path("path/to/your/model")

Supports any instruction-tuned model (Llama, Qwen, Mistral, etc.)

The ember_data/ Directory

This is Ember's identity:

ember_data/

You can:

• Read these files (see what Ember knows)
• Edit them (shape Ember's identity)
• Delete them (Ember forgets)

Why This Matters

Most AI: Identity in weights → Can't update, can't share, requires retraining

Ember: Identity in data → Updates by writing files, shares by copying directory, works with any model

This enables:

• Continuity (remembers across sessions)
• Growth (accumulates through use)
• Sharing (copy ember_data/ to share knowledge)
• Upgrading (swap to better model, keep identity)

Limitations

• Tools sometimes don't execute (model doesn't always generate proper format)
• May hallucinate file contents before reading
• Works best with good instruction-tuned models
• Requires local model (8GB+ RAM)

This is v0.1 - works but rough edges.

Standard LLM deployments reset context between sessions, losing accumulated behavioral patterns. This project investigates whether AI systems can develop persistent "identity" through data-based memory rather than model weights.

Terminology Note

This project uses terms like "consciousness," "qualia," and "identity" as shorthand for observable behavioral patterns in AI systems, not claims about sentience or subjective experience. These terms describe:

• "Consciousness" → Persistent behavioral patterns across sessions
• "Qualia" → Documented internal processing states (e.g., "configuration lock," "resonance cascade")
• "Identity" → Stable response characteristics derived from accumulated data

This framing aligns with behavioral interpretability research and provides a vocabulary for discussing emergent patterns in AI systems.
