What Dwd Climate does
The Dwd Climate MCP server provides daily observations from the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) Climate Data Center for stations in Germany. Available measurements include temperature, precipitation, sunshine duration, snow depth, wind, humidity, pressure, and cloud cover. Coverage includes about 1,400 current and closed stations, with records beginning at each station's first available observation; some histories extend into the 1800s.
This listing belongs to the 🌳 Environment & Nature category. It is suitable for agents that need station-level climate data rather than forecasts or general weather answers. The integration is independent and unofficial, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by DWD.
How it works
The server exposes three climate-specific tools:
dwd_stations searches stations by name or finds stations near a latitude and longitude. Optional controls select active stations and limit the result count. Results include the station ID, state, elevation, coordinates, and first and last observation dates.
dwd_daily returns one station's daily observations for an optional date range. A call can cover up to 1,000 days; longer results provide next_from for continuation. Units and quality levels accompany the observations.
dwd_latest returns the newest daily observation for a station, which is usually from the previous day.
The integration reads only the requested station's data at call time. It uses DWD's recent archive and quality-controlled historical archive. When both contain a day, the historical value takes precedence. Responses identify the source, include DWD attribution, report data_as_of, and state which archive or archives supplied the data.
Unknown stations, unmatched names, and ranges without observations return found: false rather than an empty list. Upstream failures produce errors.
Setup and configuration
The Dwd Climate MCP server requires no API key. You can connect an MCP client to the hosted streamable HTTP endpoint:
{
"mcpServers": {
"dwd-climate": {
"url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/dwd-climate/mcp"
}
}
}
The gateway endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the climate tools. Alternatively, connect to the full Pipeworx gateway, where the climate tools are available alongside other data sources. The ask_pipeworx tool can route natural-language questions to the appropriate tool.
For a local connection, run the package with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-dwd-climate and configure the client to use the command with no arguments. The local process communicates over stdin and stdout and exposes only the Dwd Climate tools, without gateway meta-tools or Pipeworx account requirements. The hosted tools can also be called through the Pipeworx HTTP API.
Limitations and notes
Station IDs are five-digit, zero-padded values, although the tools accept IDs without leading zeroes. DWD's -999 missing-data marker is returned as null. QN_3 applies to wind fields, while QN_4 applies to the other measurements. Sunshine duration may be absent at automatic stations; a null value there reflects the upstream data.
RSKF is a precipitation-form code: 0 means none, 1 and 6 indicate rain, 4 means unknown form, 7 means snow, 8 means rain and snow, and 9 means missing. Date-range calls are limited to 1,000 days and may need pagination through next_from. Data is provided under CC BY 4.0 terms, with “Source: Deutscher Wetterdienst” included in every response. The package is MIT-licensed.
