We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y downdetector-mcp

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked Today.

Overview

The Downdetector MCP server queries public Downdetector data for current service status and outage reports. Its `downdetector` tool accepts a required service name and an optional regional domain such as `uk`, `it`, or `fr`. Reach for it when an agent needs to check whether a monitored service is experiencing an outage or recent incident activity. No authentication is required, but public data may be rate-limited and some domains may be intermittently blocked.

Use cases

  • Check whether a service is currently experiencing an outage
  • Query recent outage reports for a named platform
  • Compare service status across Downdetector regional domains
  • Ask an agent to investigate reported problems with a service

Key features

  • Current service status queries
  • Outage report retrieval
  • Optional regional Downdetector domains
  • No authentication required
  • Case-insensitive service names

How Downdetector works

What Downdetector MCP server does

The Downdetector MCP server gives MCP-compatible AI clients access to public Downdetector status and outage information. It is intended for checking whether a named service is currently reporting problems and for retrieving recent outage activity.

The server covers services listed by Downdetector across multiple regional domains. Typical requests can check services such as Steam, Netflix, Twitter, Instagram, or Discord, provided the service is monitored by Downdetector. Service names are matched without regard to letter case, but the name still needs to correspond to Downdetector's naming.

How it works

The server exposes one MCP tool named downdetector. A client sends a required serviceName value and can optionally provide domain to select a Downdetector regional site. For example, a request may use steam with the com domain or request reports for Instagram through the UK site.

The tool reads information from Downdetector's public interface rather than an authenticated API. This makes it suitable for ad hoc status checks from an agent, without requiring a service-specific credential. Results depend on the availability and freshness of the public Downdetector page being queried.

Setup and configuration

Installation uses the package's npm-based MCP configuration. The project README directs users to an installation helper that generates configuration for supported MCP clients. The repository also documents a local development flow based on Node.js: install dependencies with npm install, run tests with npm run test, and create a build with npm run build.

No authentication token or required environment variable is documented. Configure the server in an MCP client, then ask the client to check a service or provide a regional domain when the location matters. The README names Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, and VS Code as supported installation targets.

Tools and capabilities

downdetector

Checks current status and outage reports for a Downdetector-monitored service.

Parameters:

  • serviceName — required service name, such as steam, netflix, or twitter.
  • domain — optional Downdetector domain, such as com, uk, it, or fr.

The Downdetector MCP server can therefore support both general service checks and region-specific queries when the relevant regional domain is available.

Limitations and notes

Information comes from Downdetector's public interface and may be subject to rate limits. Some domains, particularly .com, may use Cloudflare protection, so requests can occasionally be unavailable or fail intermittently.

A failed lookup may also result from using a service label that does not match Downdetector's listing. Use the service's Downdetector name rather than assuming that an arbitrary product or company name will resolve. Regional coverage depends on the domains supported by Downdetector.

The Downdetector MCP server reports the data available from that external service; it does not provide an independent outage-monitoring source or guarantee that every service is listed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Downdetector

Downdetector is an MCP server that connects AI clients to public Downdetector data. Its main tool, downdetector, checks current service status and outage reports, with an optional domain parameter for regional sites such as the UK, Italy, and France. No authentication is required.

Install it through the README's linked installation helper, which generates MCP client configuration using the package's npm command. The documented local workflow also requires Node.js, followed by `npm install`; tests run with `npm run test` and the project builds with `npm run build`.

Use the installation helper to generate the appropriate configuration, then invoke the `downdetector` tool with a service name and, when needed, a regional domain.

Provide the service name to the `downdetector` tool. Add the optional `domain` parameter when you need a regional site, such as `uk`, `it`, or `fr`. The service name must match a service monitored by Downdetector.

No, it does not require authentication. The server accesses Downdetector's public interface, although requests may be rate-limited and some domains may be intermittently unavailable because of Cloudflare protection.
