Overview

Datagov Il MCP server connects AI agents to Israel’s data.gov.il national open-data portal through its CKAN API. It supports dataset discovery, full dataset and resource inspection, row-level queries for active datastore resources, and lists of organizations and thematic groups. Use it when an agent needs to find or read Israeli public datasets, including catalogues whose metadata and fields are often in Hebrew. It runs either as a hosted MCP endpoint through Pipeworx or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Search Israeli government datasets by Hebrew or English terms
  • Inspect dataset resources before querying their contents
  • Read rows from active data.gov.il datastore tables
  • List ministries, agencies, and thematic data categories

Key features

  • CKAN dataset catalogue search
  • Dataset and resource inspection
  • Row queries for active datastore resources
  • Organization listing
  • Thematic group listing
  • Hebrew and English query support

How Datagov Il works

What Datagov Il MCP server does

Datagov Il MCP server exposes selected data.gov.il catalogue and data-access operations through MCP. The underlying portal uses CKAN, and the server maps catalogue searches, dataset records, organizations, groups, and datastore rows to agent-callable tools.

Dataset discovery starts with search_datasets, which searches the data.gov.il catalogue and returns matching titles and descriptions. Queries can be written in Hebrew or English. Once a relevant result is found, dataset_details retrieves the complete record by dataset ID or slug, including its resource entries.

How it works

A typical workflow is to search for a dataset, inspect its resources, then identify a resource whose datastore_active value is true. The resource’s id is the resource_id required by datastore_query, which reads the table rows through CKAN’s datastore interface. This means catalogue metadata and resource status should be checked before attempting a row query.

The remaining tools provide catalogue navigation. list_organizations returns publishing bodies such as ministries and agencies, while list_groups returns thematic groups or categories. Data returned by the portal may include Hebrew names, field labels, and values, using UTF-8.

Setup and configuration

The Datagov Il MCP server can be used through the hosted Pipeworx endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/datagov-il/mcp. An MCP client configuration supplies that URL under an MCP server entry. The pack endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the pack’s five listed tools; its initialize response is the authoritative source for the tools available at connection time.

For a local connection, run the package with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-datagov-il and configure the MCP client to start that command. The local process communicates over stdin and stdout and exposes only the Datagov Il pack tools, without the gateway’s shared meta-tools.

The tools can also be called over HTTP through the gateway’s versioned tool endpoints, including a POST request for dataset search. This option is useful when an MCP client is not available.

Tools and capabilities

  • Search the data.gov.il dataset catalogue with Hebrew or English terms.
  • Retrieve a complete dataset record by ID or slug.
  • Inspect resource IDs and datastore activation status.
  • Query row data from resources with datastore_active=true.
  • List data-publishing organizations.
  • List thematic catalogue groups.

Limitations and notes

The Datagov Il MCP server only queries resources that expose an active CKAN datastore. A dataset can appear in search results without offering a row-queryable resource, so dataset_details is needed to verify eligibility. Resource fields and returned values are often in Hebrew, which may affect query construction and result interpretation.

The hosted pack endpoint lists shared Pipeworx tools alongside the pack-specific tools, so its total tool count is larger than the five operations described here. The standalone package avoids those additional gateway tools but also does not provide cross-catalogue routing through ask_pipeworx. Both modes use the same data.gov.il source and pack-specific capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions about Datagov Il

Datagov Il is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Israel’s data.gov.il national open-data portal through its CKAN API. Its main tools search datasets, inspect dataset records and resources, query datastore rows, and list publishing organizations or thematic groups. Results may contain Hebrew fields and values.

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-datagov-il` and configure your MCP client to launch that command. The package runs locally over stdin and stdout, needs no Pipeworx account, and exposes the pack’s five tools without the gateway’s shared meta-tools.

First call `dataset_details` to find a resource with `datastore_active=true`, then pass that resource’s `id` as the `resource_id` for `datastore_query`. Row queries only work for resources that have an active CKAN datastore.

Yes. Cursor is named as a supported MCP client in the setup instructions. Configure the hosted endpoint `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/datagov-il/mcp`, or configure Cursor to launch the local `npx` command.

Yes. The Pipeworx gateway exposes HTTP tool endpoints that can be called with requests such as POST to the dataset-search endpoint. The README also provides a GET endpoint for inspecting an individual tool.
