Overview

Datagov Ie MCP server connects AI agents to Ireland’s national open-data catalogue through its CKAN API. It supports dataset search, full record lookup, row-level queries for datastore-enabled resources, and browsing by organization or thematic group. Use it when an agent needs to find Irish public datasets or inspect structured data without manually navigating data.gov.ie. It is available as a hosted MCP endpoint or a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Search Irish government datasets about housing
  • Inspect resources in a data.gov.ie dataset
  • Read rows from an active CKAN datastore
  • List organizations publishing public data
  • Browse thematic groups in the catalogue

Key features

  • Searches Ireland’s CKAN open-data catalogue
  • Retrieves dataset records by ID or slug
  • Queries rows from datastore-enabled resources
  • Lists publishing organizations
  • Lists thematic data groups
  • Supports hosted and local stdio deployment

How Datagov Ie works

What Datagov Ie MCP server does

Datagov Ie MCP server gives MCP-compatible agents access to Ireland’s national open-data portal, data.gov.ie. The service works with catalogue information published by government departments, state agencies, and local authorities. Search results include dataset titles, descriptions, and available resources in English.

The server can also retrieve a complete dataset record using its identifier or slug. These records expose resource metadata, including download URLs and whether a resource is available through CKAN’s datastore. When a resource is datastore-enabled, an agent can request its table rows instead of downloading and parsing the source file itself.

How it works

The hosted endpoint is served through the Pipeworx gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/datagov-ie/mcp. A client connects using MCP and can call the catalogue tools directly. The gateway endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx tools, so its tools/list response contains more than the five catalogue-specific tools. The exact scope is reported during initialization.

A local package is also available through npm. The standalone process communicates over standard input and output and exposes only the Datagov Ie tools. Both access methods use the same underlying data source. The gateway can additionally route broader questions through its shared ask_pipeworx tool, while the local process does not provide that gateway routing layer.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the gateway URL as an MCP server in a compatible client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "datagov-ie": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/datagov-ie/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local use, configure the client to run the npm package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "datagov-ie": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-datagov-ie"]
    }
  }
}

Datagov Ie MCP server does not require environment variables in the documented configurations. The package can also be started directly with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-datagov-ie to verify that it launches.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets searches the CKAN catalogue with a query and returns matching datasets, descriptions, and resources.
  • dataset_details retrieves a complete dataset record by ID or slug, including each resource’s URL and datastore_active status.
  • datastore_query reads rows from a CKAN datastore resource. It requires the resource ID and works only when that resource has datastore_active=true.
  • list_organizations returns publishing organizations such as departments, agencies, and county or city councils.
  • list_groups returns the thematic groups used to categorize catalogue content.

Limitations and notes

Datagov Ie MCP server reads catalogue and datastore content exposed by data.gov.ie. A resource may have a download URL without supporting row-level queries; only resources marked as datastore-active can be passed to datastore_query. Other resources may be files such as PDFs, CSVs, or XLSX documents and must be handled through their listed URLs.

The hosted pack endpoint includes shared gateway meta-tools in addition to the catalogue tools. Use the standalone npm process when an agent should see only this pack’s tools, or use the full Pipeworx gateway when direct access to all available packs is preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions about Datagov Ie

Datagov Ie is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Ireland’s national open-data catalogue through the CKAN API. It provides tools to search datasets, inspect dataset records, query active datastore tables, and list publishing organizations or thematic groups using English catalogue metadata.

Install it by adding the hosted MCP URL to your client, or run the local npm package with npx. The hosted endpoint is https://gateway.pipeworx.io/datagov-ie/mcp; local configuration uses @pipeworx/mcp-datagov-ie with standard input and output.

It can query only resources marked datastore_active=true. Dataset details may list CSV, XLSX, PDF, or other download URLs, but datastore_query reads rows only from resources exposed through the CKAN datastore.

Yes, the README names Cursor as a supported MCP client. Configure Cursor with either the hosted gateway URL or the local npx command shown for the Datagov Ie package.
