We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-sonoma

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 7d ago.

mcp-data-sonoma

Sonoma County Open Data (data.sonomacounty.ca.gov) Socrata MCP.

Part of Pipeworx — an MCP gateway connecting AI agents to 1878+ live data sources. This is an independent, unofficial integration — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the upstream provider.

Tools

ToolDescription
datasetsSearch the Sonoma County Open Data catalog of open datasets by keyword. Returns each dataset's resource_id, name, description, category and update date — pass the resource_id to query/metadata.
queryRun a Socrata SoQL query against a Sonoma County Open Data dataset by resource_id (e.g. "3rsj-iche"). Filter with where/select/group/order (SoQL clauses, without the leading $) plus limit/offset. Returns matching rows as JSON.
metadataGet a Sonoma County Open Data dataset's schema + metadata (columns, types, row count, category, last-updated) by resource_id, e.g. "3rsj-iche".

Quick Start

Add to your MCP client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.):

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-sonoma": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-sonoma/mcp"
    }
  }
}

What this endpoint actually serves

tools/list at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-sonoma/mcp returns the tools in the table above plus the shared Pipeworx meta-tools — ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, remember/recall and the rest of the gateway-wide set. So the tool count you see is larger than this table: a single-pack endpoint currently lists roughly 30 shared tools alongside the pack's own. The connection's initialize response states its exact scope, and is the authoritative answer for a given day.

This is deliberate, not multiplexing by accident. The meta-tools are what let a scoped connection answer a question this pack does not cover — via ask_pipeworx, which routes across the whole catalog — without you adding a second MCP server. There is currently no way to mount a pack endpoint without them; if the extra schemas cost you more context than the routing is worth, connect to the full gateway once rather than to several pack endpoints.

Or connect to the full Pipeworx gateway to get every pack's tools listed directly, instead of just this one's:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pipeworx": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Both URLs reach the same gateway and the same 1878+ data sources. The only difference is which pack's tools are listed directly; ask_pipeworx reaches all of them from either one.

No MCP client? Call it over HTTP

Terminal
curl -X POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/data_sonoma_datasets \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"query":"budget"}'

No account needed for the first calls. Inspect any tool: GET https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/data_sonoma_datasets. Find one: POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/search_packs with {"query":"..."}.

Standalone (no gateway account)

This package also runs as a local stdio MCP server — no Pipeworx account, no gateway round-trip:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-sonoma": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-data-sonoma"]
    }
  }
}

Or run it directly to confirm it starts:

Terminal
npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-sonoma

It speaks MCP over stdin/stdout and answers initialize/tools/list/tools/call for only this pack's tools — none of the shared meta-tools the gateway connection above adds. Same source, same tools, no ask_pipeworx routing.

Using with ask_pipeworx

Instead of calling tools directly, you can ask questions in plain English — this works on the pack endpoint above as well as on the full gateway:

Code
ask_pipeworx({ question: "your question about Data Sonoma data" })

The gateway picks the right tool and fills the arguments automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions about Data Sonoma

Data Sonoma is an MCP server that connects AI clients to Sonoma County Open Data through the Socrata platform. It provides tools to search the catalog, inspect dataset metadata and schemas, and run SoQL queries against datasets by resource ID. It can connect through Pipeworx gateway or run locally as stdio MCP server.

Use the `datasets` tool with a keyword to search the Sonoma County Open Data catalog. Results include each dataset’s resource ID, name, description, category, and update date; use the resource ID with `metadata` or `query`.

Use the `query` tool with a dataset resource ID and optional `where`, `select`, `group`, `order`, `limit`, and `offset` parameters. The SoQL clauses are provided without leading dollar signs, and matching rows are returned as JSON.

Use the `metadata` tool with the dataset’s resource ID. It returns the schema and metadata, including columns, types, row count, category, and last-updated information.

Add the Pipeworx MCP endpoint `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-sonoma/mcp` to an MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf. You can also run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-sonoma` as a local stdio MCP server.
