Install not yet sandbox-tested— the server itself is confirmed live (we called its tools/list endpoint). The stdio install command is a separate, ongoing check.

Overview

Data Sncf connects MCP clients to SNCF Open Data at ressources.data.sncf.com through the OpenDataSoft API. Search datasets, inspect schemas, then run ODSQL queries with filtering, aggregation, sorting, and pagination. Use it when an agent needs structured SNCF rail data rather than general travel information. It is available as a hosted Pipeworx endpoint or a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Find SNCF datasets covering train schedules or station data
  • Inspect dataset fields before constructing an ODSQL query
  • Filter and aggregate rail punctuality or ridership records
  • Paginate through SNCF Open Data query results
  • Connect an agent to SNCF data through MCP or HTTP

Key features

  • Search SNCF Open Data datasets by keyword
  • Inspect dataset metadata and schemas
  • Query records with ODSQL
  • Filter, aggregate, sort, and paginate results
  • Run through a hosted endpoint or local stdio package

How Data Sncf works

What Data Sncf does

Data Sncf exposes SNCF Open Data through three MCP tools. search_datasets finds relevant datasets by keyword and returns identifiers, titles, themes, and record counts. Search coverage includes train schedules, stations, punctuality, ridership, and the rail network.

dataset_info retrieves metadata for a selected dataset, including its fields, schema, themes, and record count. This is useful for discovering the column names before writing a query. The query tool reads records using ODSQL and supports filters, grouped or aggregated results, ordering, and pagination.

The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by SNCF or the upstream data provider.

How it works

A typical workflow starts with search_datasets using a keyword such as a transport topic. Pass a returned dataset ID to dataset_info to inspect the available fields, then use that schema to build a query request. Queries can narrow records with where, select or group data for aggregation, sort results with order_by, and divide larger result sets with limit and offset.

The hosted MCP endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-sncf/mcp. It exposes the Data Sncf tools along with shared Pipeworx gateway tools, including routing and discovery functions. The full gateway endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp provides access to all listed data sources, while ask_pipeworx can route questions across the catalog from either gateway connection.

For direct HTTP use, the gateway provides tool endpoints under /v1/tools/; for example, data_sncf_search_datasets accepts a JSON POST request. The first calls do not require an account.

Setup and configuration

Add the hosted endpoint to an MCP client with a remote server configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-sncf": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-sncf/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The package can also run locally over stdio without a Pipeworx account or gateway round trip:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-sncf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-data-sncf"]
    }
  }
}

Run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-sncf directly to start the local server. The local process answers MCP initialize, tools/list, and tools/call requests and exposes only the Data Sncf tools. The hosted connection adds shared Pipeworx meta-tools, so its tool list is larger than the local package's list.

Frequently Asked Questions about Data Sncf

Data Sncf is an MCP server that connects AI clients to SNCF Open Data at ressources.data.sncf.com. Its main tools search datasets, inspect dataset metadata and schemas, and query records with ODSQL filters, aggregations, sorting, and pagination for schedules, stations, punctuality, ridership, and rail-network data.

Install it either by configuring the hosted URL or by running the npm package locally. Use `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-sncf/mcp` for the hosted connection, or configure `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-sncf` as a stdio MCP server.

Yes, Data Sncf can be added to Cursor using the hosted MCP URL or its local stdio command. The hosted configuration connects to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-sncf/mcp`, while the local option runs `@pipeworx/mcp-data-sncf` through `npx`.

First call `search_datasets`, then use `dataset_info` to learn the dataset fields and pass the dataset ID to `query`. The query tool accepts ODSQL options for filtering, grouping or aggregation, ordering, and pagination.

Yes, the local stdio package runs without a Pipeworx account, and the first calls to the hosted gateway do not require an account. The local mode communicates over stdin and stdout and avoids a gateway round trip.
