Overview

Data Santaclara MCP server connects AI agents to Santa Clara County Open Data at data.sccgov.org through Socrata-backed MCP tools. It searches the dataset catalog, returns schemas and metadata, and runs SoQL queries against selected datasets. Use it when an agent needs structured county data by dataset ID, including filtered, grouped, ordered, paginated results. It is available through the Pipeworx gateway or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Search county datasets by topic
  • Inspect dataset schemas before querying
  • Filter and paginate county data with SoQL
  • Retrieve grouped or ordered dataset rows

Key features

  • Santa Clara County Open Data catalog search
  • Socrata SoQL query execution
  • Dataset schema and metadata retrieval
  • JSON row responses
  • Remote gateway and local stdio modes

How Data Santaclara works

What Data Santaclara does

Data Santaclara MCP server exposes Santa Clara County Open Data from data.sccgov.org through the Model Context Protocol. Its three pack-specific tools cover dataset discovery, schema inspection, and data retrieval. An agent can search the catalog for a topic, use the returned resource ID to inspect a dataset, and then query its rows.

The service is suited to workflows that need county datasets in machine-readable JSON rather than manual browsing. Results from catalog searches include the resource ID, dataset name, description, category, and update date. Metadata responses describe columns, types, row count, category, and last update information.

How it works

Start with datasets when the relevant dataset is not known. After identifying a resource ID, call metadata to understand the available fields and their types. Use query to run a Socrata SoQL request against that dataset.

The query tool accepts where, select, group, and order clauses without the leading dollar sign used in some Socrata examples. It also supports limit and offset for controlling result size and pagination. Matching rows are returned as JSON.

The gateway endpoint lists the three pack tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools. Those shared tools can route broader questions through ask_pipeworx, while the local package exposes only the Data Santaclara tools.

Setup and configuration

For a remote MCP connection, add the Pipeworx endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-santaclara/mcp to an MCP client. The full gateway is also available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp; both endpoints use the same gateway and source catalog, but they differ in which tools are listed directly.

For a local stdio installation, run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-santaclara and configure the MCP client with command: "npx" and the package as its argument. The local mode does not require a Pipeworx account or gateway round trip. It communicates over standard input and output.

HTTP clients can call the gateway's tool endpoint directly. For example, the dataset search endpoint is POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/data_santaclara_datasets with a JSON body containing a query.

Tools and capabilities

  • datasets: Find Santa Clara County datasets by keyword.
  • metadata: Retrieve schema and dataset details using a resource ID.
  • query: Execute SoQL filters, projections, grouping, ordering, and pagination.

Limitations and notes

The pack-specific tools require a dataset resource ID for metadata and row queries, so discovery may be needed first. Gateway connections include shared Pipeworx tools in addition to the pack's own tools, which increases the tool list. The local stdio package avoids those shared tools and provides only the three Data Santaclara capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions about Data Santaclara

Data Santaclara is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Santa Clara County Open Data at data.sccgov.org. Its main tools search datasets, retrieve schema and metadata by resource ID, and run Socrata SoQL queries with filtering, grouping, ordering, limits, and offsets.

Install it locally with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-santaclara` and configure that command as a stdio MCP server. Alternatively, connect an MCP client to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-santaclara/mcp` for the hosted gateway endpoint.

Yes, Data Santaclara works with Cursor through the Pipeworx MCP endpoint. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-santaclara/mcp` as the server URL in Cursor's MCP configuration.

Use `datasets` to find a resource ID, then call `query` with that ID and optional SoQL clauses. The tool accepts `where`, `select`, `group`, `order`, `limit`, and `offset`, and returns matching rows as JSON.

Yes, run the npm package locally as a stdio MCP server without a Pipeworx account. The local mode uses `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-santaclara` and exposes only the pack's three tools.
