Overview

Data Piercecounty MCP server connects AI agents to the Pierce County Open Data catalog at internal.open.piercecountywa.gov. It provides tools to find datasets, inspect schemas and metadata, and run Socrata SoQL queries with filtering, grouping, sorting, limits, and offsets. Use it when an agent needs structured access to Pierce County datasets rather than manually browsing the catalog. It is available as a local stdio package or through the Pipeworx gateway.

Use cases

  • Search Pierce County datasets by topic
  • Inspect columns before writing a SoQL query
  • Filter and aggregate open-data records
  • Retrieve paginated dataset results
  • Connect an MCP client to the county catalog

Key features

  • Keyword search across the Pierce County Open Data catalog
  • Socrata SoQL querying by resource ID
  • Dataset schemas and metadata
  • Filtering, selection, grouping, and ordering
  • Limit and offset pagination
  • Local stdio and Pipeworx gateway access

How Data Piercecounty works

What Data Piercecounty MCP server does

The Data Piercecounty MCP server exposes Pierce County Open Data through the Model Context Protocol. It works with the county's Socrata catalog and supports a dataset-discovery workflow: search for a relevant dataset, inspect its structure, then query its rows using the returned resource identifier.

The datasets tool searches the catalog by keyword. Results include each dataset's resource ID, name, description, category, and update date. The metadata tool accepts a resource ID and returns schema information, column types, row count, category, and last-updated information. The query tool runs a SoQL request against a selected dataset and returns matching rows as JSON.

How it works

A typical interaction starts with datasets, using a term such as a department, program, or subject area. After selecting a resource ID, an agent can call metadata to learn the available columns and data types before constructing a query. Queries can supply where, select, group, and order clauses, without the leading dollar signs used in some Socrata examples. limit and offset support result-size and pagination controls.

The Data Piercecounty MCP server can run locally through standard input and output, or remotely through Pipeworx's MCP gateway. The gateway endpoint exposes the pack's three tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools. Those shared tools can route broader questions across the gateway's catalog. The local package exposes only the Pierce County tools and does not provide that gateway routing layer.

Setup and configuration

For a local connection, configure an MCP client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-piercecounty. The package communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require a Pipeworx account. Running the same command directly provides a basic startup check.

A remote client can connect to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-piercecounty/mcp. The full gateway is also available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp when an application needs all listed data packs directly. The gateway supports HTTP tool calls as well; for example, the dataset search tool can be invoked with a POST request to its versioned tools endpoint and a JSON query body. The provided examples state that no account is needed for the first calls.

Tools and capabilities

  • datasets: Search Pierce County's open-data catalog by keyword.
  • metadata: Retrieve a dataset's schema and catalog metadata by resource ID.
  • query: Execute a Socrata SoQL query and return rows as JSON.
  • SoQL clauses supported by the query interface include where, select, group, and order.
  • Result pagination can use limit and offset.

Limitations and notes

The gateway pack endpoint lists shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the three Pierce County tools, so its tool count is larger than the pack-specific list. The exact gateway scope is reported by the connection's initialize response and may change. Local stdio mode avoids those shared tools and supports only this data pack.

Queries depend on valid Pierce County dataset resource IDs and the columns available in each dataset. Use metadata before writing complex queries when the schema is unknown. The material describes access to open datasets and does not document authentication options, write operations, or data beyond the Pierce County Socrata catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions about Data Piercecounty

Data Piercecounty is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Pierce County Open Data through Socrata. Its main tools search the dataset catalog, run SoQL queries by resource_id, and retrieve schema and metadata. It can run locally over stdio or through the Pipeworx gateway.

Install it by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-piercecounty`. The package runs locally over stdin and stdout, requires no Pipeworx account, and can also be started directly with the same command.

Use `datasets` to find a resource ID, then call `query` with that ID and the desired SoQL arguments. The query tool accepts `where`, `select`, `group`, `order`, `limit`, and `offset`, and returns matching rows as JSON.

Yes, Cursor is named as a supported MCP client in the setup instructions. Configure it with either the remote gateway URL or the local `npx` command, depending on whether you want gateway access or only the pack's three local tools.

The `metadata` tool returns a dataset's schema and catalog details, including columns, types, row count, category, and last-updated information. Supply the dataset's resource ID, which you can obtain from the `datasets` search tool.
