Overview

Data Nantes MCP server exposes Nantes Métropole Open Data from data.nantesmetropole.fr through OpenDataSoft tools. It lets agents find datasets, inspect schemas and metadata, then query records with ODSQL filters, aggregations, sorting, and pagination. Use it for questions about Nantes mobility, urban services, environment, or geography data. It is available as a hosted Pipeworx endpoint or a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Find Nantes mobility datasets by keyword
  • Inspect dataset fields before writing a query
  • Filter and paginate Nantes Open Data records
  • Aggregate urban or environmental records with ODSQL

Key features

  • Searches Nantes Métropole Open Data datasets
  • Returns dataset metadata and schemas
  • Queries records with ODSQL filters
  • Supports grouping, selection, and sorting
  • Supports limit and offset pagination
  • Runs through hosted MCP or local stdio

How Data Nantes works

What the Data Nantes MCP server does

The Data Nantes MCP server connects AI agents to Nantes Métropole Open Data at data.nantesmetropole.fr, an OpenDataSoft-powered catalog. It provides a focused way to discover datasets and work with their records without manually browsing the portal or constructing API requests.

The catalog covers subjects including mobility, urban services, environment, and geography. Dataset searches return identifiers, names, themes, and record totals. Those identifiers can then be used to inspect a dataset or run a query.

How it works

A typical workflow starts with search_datasets, using a keyword such as transport or mobility. Once a relevant dataset is found, dataset_info reveals its fields, schema, themes, and record count. This metadata step is useful because the field names are needed when building a query.

The query tool accepts ODSQL operations. Queries can filter records with where, select or group values for aggregation, order results, and limit or offset returned rows. This supports both record retrieval and structured questions such as grouping data by a category.

The hosted endpoint is part of Pipeworx. Its connection includes the Data Nantes tools as well as shared gateway tools, and ask_pipeworx can route natural-language questions across the wider catalog. The standalone package exposes only the Data Nantes tools and does not add that gateway routing layer.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the following MCP endpoint to a compatible client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-nantes": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-nantes/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf are named as compatible setup targets. The same Pipeworx gateway can also be configured through https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp when direct access to all catalog packs is preferred.

For local stdio use, run the published package with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-nantes": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-data-nantes"]
    }
  }
}

The local package does not require a Pipeworx account. The hosted endpoint can also be called over HTTP, including with the documented /v1/tools/data_nantes_search_datasets route.

Tools and capabilities

The Data Nantes MCP server includes:

  • search_datasets for keyword-based catalog discovery.
  • dataset_info for fields, schema, themes, and record counts.
  • query for ODSQL filtering, grouping, selection, ordering, and pagination.

The hosted gateway additionally lists shared Pipeworx meta-tools. Its exact tool scope is provided by the connection's initialize response and may differ from the standalone package.

Limitations and notes

The server is specific to Nantes Métropole Open Data; it is not a general-purpose database connector. Query construction depends on the target dataset's schema, so inspecting metadata before querying is recommended. Gateway pack endpoints currently include shared meta-tools, while the local stdio mode exposes only the three pack-specific tools. The project is licensed under MIT.

Frequently Asked Questions about Data Nantes

Data Nantes is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Nantes Métropole Open Data at data.nantesmetropole.fr. Its main tools search datasets, inspect dataset metadata and schemas, and query records with ODSQL filtering, aggregation, sorting, and pagination for mobility, urban services, environment, and geography data.

Install it locally by configuring an MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-nantes` over stdio.

Use `search_datasets` first, inspect the selected dataset with `dataset_info`, then call `query` with ODSQL parameters. The query tool supports filtering, grouping and selection, ordering, and pagination through limit and offset.

Yes, Data Nantes works with Cursor through the hosted MCP endpoint. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-nantes/mcp` to Cursor's MCP configuration, or configure the local stdio package with `npx`.
