Overview

The Data Fortworth MCP server connects AI agents to Fort Worth Open Data at data.fortworthtexas.gov through Socrata. It provides tools to find datasets, inspect schemas and metadata, and run SoQL queries with filtering, grouping, sorting, pagination, and field selection. Use it when an agent needs structured access to Fort Worth’s public datasets rather than manually browsing the catalog. It is available as a hosted MCP endpoint or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Search Fort Worth’s public datasets by keyword
  • Inspect dataset schemas before writing a query
  • Run filtered SoQL queries against civic datasets
  • Paginate and sort returned dataset rows

Key features

  • Keyword search across the Fort Worth Open Data catalog
  • Dataset schema and metadata inspection
  • Socrata SoQL queries
  • Filtering, grouping, sorting, field selection, and pagination
  • Hosted MCP and local stdio deployment options

How Data Fortworth works

What the Data Fortworth MCP server does

The Data Fortworth MCP server gives MCP-compatible agents access to the Fort Worth Open Data catalog at data.fortworthtexas.gov. Its three pack-specific tools cover dataset discovery, dataset inspection, and data retrieval. Results are returned in forms suitable for an agent to use in a follow-up request or present as structured information.

Use datasets to search the catalog by keyword. Each result includes a resource ID, name, description, category, and update date. The resource ID is the identifier required by the other two tools. Use metadata to inspect a dataset before querying it; the response includes its columns, data types, row count, category, and last-updated information.

The query tool runs Socrata SoQL against a selected dataset and returns matching rows as JSON. It accepts where, select, group, and order clauses, along with limit and offset. The SoQL values are supplied without the leading dollar sign used in some API examples.

How it works

A typical workflow starts with a keyword search through datasets. The agent then uses the returned resource ID with metadata to learn the available fields and types. After that, query can retrieve a targeted result set using SoQL expressions and pagination parameters.

The hosted MCP connection is exposed at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-fortworth/mcp. That endpoint lists the three Data Fortworth tools together with shared Pipeworx gateway tools. The gateway’s ask_pipeworx tool can route plain-language questions across the broader catalog, including this data source. Alternatively, the full gateway endpoint can be used when direct access to all available packs is preferred.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the MCP URL to a client configuration under the data-fortworth server name. The package documentation specifically shows Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf configurations using the hosted endpoint.

A local option is available through the @pipeworx/mcp-data-fortworth npm package. Configure the client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-fortworth; the process communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require a Pipeworx account. The local process exposes only the three pack-specific tools, unlike the hosted gateway connection, which also includes shared meta-tools.

The tools can also be called over HTTP. For example, the gateway provides a POST endpoint for the dataset-search operation at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/data_fortworth_datasets, with a JSON body containing a query value. The material states that initial calls do not require an account.

Limitations and notes

The Data Fortworth MCP server is limited to the Fort Worth Open Data source and the capabilities exposed by its three tools. It does not provide a separate tool for arbitrary non-Socrata data. Hosted pack connections include additional shared gateway schemas, so their reported tool count is larger than the pack-specific list. The connection’s initialize response is the authoritative source for the exact scope at a given time.

The local package avoids those shared gateway tools and routing behavior, but uses the same source and pack-specific capabilities. The documented license is MIT.

Frequently Asked Questions about Data Fortworth

Data Fortworth is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Fort Worth Open Data at data.fortworthtexas.gov through Socrata. Its main tools search datasets, retrieve schema and metadata, and run SoQL queries with filtering, grouping, sorting, field selection, limits, and offsets. It supports hosted MCP and local stdio use.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-fortworth`. The package communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require a Pipeworx account. You can also connect to the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-fortworth/mcp`.

First search with `datasets` to obtain a dataset resource ID, then use `query` with that ID and optional SoQL clauses. The query tool accepts `where`, `select`, `group`, `order`, `limit`, and `offset`, and returns matching rows as JSON.

Yes, Data Fortworth works with Cursor through the hosted MCP endpoint. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-fortworth/mcp` as an MCP server in the client configuration. The hosted connection includes the pack tools and shared Pipeworx gateway tools.
