Overview

Cryptocompare exposes CoinDesk Data, formerly CryptoCompare/CCData, through MCP tools for prices, OHLC history, market rankings, news, social statistics, coins, and exchanges. It can run as a local stdio package or through the Pipeworx gateway, where the scoped endpoint also includes gateway meta-tools. Every data call requires a CoinDesk Data API key passed as `_apiKey`; Pipeworx does not provide a shared key. Reach for it when an agent needs historical market data or CryptoCompare-compatible reference data rather than only current prices.

Use cases

  • Query current prices across coins and fiat currencies
  • Retrieve minute, hourly, or daily OHLC history
  • Rank assets by trading volume or market capitalization
  • Collect crypto news and social statistics

Key features

  • Single- and multi-asset price queries
  • Minute, hourly, and daily OHLC data
  • Volume, market-cap, and trading-pair rankings
  • News, categories, and feed metadata
  • Coin, exchange, and social-statistics lookups
  • Local stdio and Pipeworx gateway connectivity

How Cryptocompare works

What Cryptocompare does

Cryptocompare provides MCP access to CoinDesk Data, the service formerly known as CryptoCompare and CCData. Its tools cover current prices, multi-asset price lookups, full market snapshots, minute/hour/day OHLC candles, trading-pair rankings, volume and market-cap rankings, news, news metadata, social statistics, coin metadata, and exchange lists.

The integration calls the legacy https://min-api.cryptocompare.com host, which remains available. CoinDesk Data identifies https://data-api.coindesk.com as its current host, and its developer portal provides account registration, API documentation, and keys.

How it works

The package supports two MCP connection patterns. A Pipeworx gateway connection can use the scoped endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/cryptocompare/mcp, or the full gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp. The scoped endpoint lists the Cryptocompare tools alongside shared Pipeworx tools such as discovery and routing utilities. ask_pipeworx can route natural-language requests across the wider catalog from either gateway URL.

A local installation runs as a stdio MCP server with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-cryptocompare. In local mode, initialize, tools/list, and tools/call expose only the Cryptocompare tool set, without the gateway meta-tools.

Setup and configuration

Register at the CoinDesk Data developer portal and pass the resulting key as _apiKey on every tool call. The package became BYOK-only on September 30, 2026; Pipeworx no longer fronts a shared platform key for this pack.

For a gateway connection, add the endpoint to an MCP client configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "cryptocompare": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/cryptocompare/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio use:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "cryptocompare": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-cryptocompare"]
    }
  }
}

Tools and capabilities

  • Query one-to-many or many-to-many current prices with price and price_multi.
  • Retrieve detailed snapshots with price_full, including 24-hour volume data.
  • Fetch minute, hourly, or daily OHLC history with configurable limits, aggregation, and end timestamps.
  • Rank trading pairs, assets by volume, or assets by market capitalization.
  • Read filtered news and inspect available news categories and feeds.
  • Retrieve coin social statistics, the complete coin list, and the exchange list.

Limitations and notes

Every data tool requires _apiKey; calls without one return a missing-key response rather than using a shared Pipeworx credential. API access and account terms are managed through CoinDesk Data.

The gateway endpoint exposes additional shared tools, so its tool count is larger than the pack's own list. Use the standalone package when a local, pack-only tool surface is preferred. The integration is independent and unofficial, with no affiliation or endorsement from the upstream provider.

When only current prices or daily history are needed without a CoinDesk Data key, the related crypto pack is presented as an alternative. The crypto-feeds pack is the alternative for crypto news.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cryptocompare

Cryptocompare is an MCP server that connects AI agents to CoinDesk Data, formerly CryptoCompare/CCData, through the legacy min-api.cryptocompare.com API. Its tools retrieve prices, OHLC history, market rankings, news, social statistics, coin lists, and exchange lists, with a CoinDesk Data API key supplied on each call.

Pass your CoinDesk Data API key as `_apiKey` on every tool call. Create a key through the CoinDesk Data developer portal; Pipeworx does not supply a shared key for this pack.

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-cryptocompare` as a local stdio MCP server, or configure an MCP client with that command and package argument. Local mode exposes the pack's own tools without Pipeworx gateway meta-tools.

Yes. Cursor is named as a supported MCP client in the setup example. Configure it with the Pipeworx endpoint or the local `npx` stdio command, then provide `_apiKey` for each data request.

It retrieves current and multi-asset prices, full snapshots, minute/hour/day OHLC history, trading-pair rankings, volume and market-cap rankings, news, news metadata, social statistics, coin lists, and exchange lists.
