Overview

Cdec Ca connects AI agents to California Department of Water Resources CDEC data for hydrology, reservoir storage, snow water content, and stream gauges. It provides station metadata, daily, hourly, event-based, latest-value, and reservoir snapshot tools using CDEC's JSON services. Use it for environmental analysis that needs current or historical California water data without managing an upstream API key. The hosted endpoint works directly over MCP, while an npm package provides a local stdio bridge.

Use cases

  • Retrieve daily or hourly readings for a CDEC station
  • Check current reservoir storage across California
  • Inspect snow water equivalent at a monitoring station
  • Look up station metadata before querying measurements
  • Analyze irregular hydrology events over a date range

Key features

  • CDEC station metadata lookup
  • Daily, hourly, and event-based SHEF data
  • Latest sensor value retrieval
  • Statewide or station-specific reservoir snapshots
  • MCP, stdio, and HTTP access
  • Keyless anonymous access with optional API key

How Cdec Ca works

What Cdec Ca does

Cdec Ca exposes California Data Exchange Center (CDEC) data from the California Department of Water Resources to MCP-compatible clients. The data covers station metadata, hydrology measurements, reservoir storage, snow water equivalent, stream gauges, and other sensor readings available through CDEC's services.

The integration supports both current lookups and historical queries. It is useful when an agent needs to identify a monitoring station, retrieve measurements for a date range, check a latest reading, or compare reservoir storage across stations. The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with or endorsed by CDEC or the California Department of Water Resources.

How it works

The hosted MCP connection is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/cdec-ca/mcp. Add that URL to an MCP client to call the CDEC-specific tools. The same gateway also exposes shared Pipeworx tools. A pack endpoint lists the CDEC tools by default, while setting PIPEWORX_META_TOOLS=1 on the npm bridge adds gateway-wide tools such as ask_pipeworx and discovery functions.

Cdec Ca retrieves data from CDEC's JSON data service and station metadata endpoint. The hosted connection and the local npm bridge both require network access. The bridge forwards requests to the hosted gateway rather than running an offline copy of the data.

The tools can also be called without an MCP client through the Pipeworx HTTP API. For example, a tool request can be sent to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/station_info with a JSON body containing a station_id.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted setup, configure the MCP client with the Cdec Ca streamable HTTP URL. Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf are shown as supported client examples. A full Pipeworx gateway URL is also available when an agent needs all catalog packs listed directly.

For local stdio use, configure the client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-cdec-ca. The package acts as a bridge to the same hosted endpoint. Anonymous use does not require a key and is limited to 50 calls per day. A free Pipeworx account increases the allowance to 200 calls per day; provide its key through the PIPEWORX_API_KEY environment variable. The key is sent as a Bearer token.

When running behind an HTTPS proxy, newer Node.js releases can use proxy environment settings when NODE_USE_ENV_PROXY=1 is enabled.

Tools and capabilities

  • station_info(station_id) returns station metadata.
  • daily_data(station_id, sensor, start, end?) retrieves daily SHEF records.
  • hourly_data(station_id, sensor, start, end?) retrieves hourly SHEF records.
  • event_data(station_id, sensor, start, end?) retrieves irregular event-based records.
  • latest(station_id, sensor) returns the latest value for a sensor.
  • reservoirs(station_id?) returns statewide reservoir snapshots or data for one station.

Sensor values use CDEC sensor numbers. Examples include sensor 15 for reservoir storage, 8 for full-natural flow, 76 for stream stage, and 3 for snow water equivalent.

Limitations and notes

The integration depends on network access to the Pipeworx gateway and CDEC services. Anonymous calls are rate-limited to 50 per day, while an account raises the allowance to 200 per day. Pack endpoints include shared gateway meta-tools in addition to their listed pack tools when that option is enabled, so the visible tool count may exceed the six Cdec Ca tools. The project is an unofficial integration rather than an upstream CDEC service.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cdec Ca

Cdec Ca is an MCP server that connects AI agents to California Data Exchange Center hydrology data. Its main tools retrieve station metadata, daily, hourly, and event-based sensor records, latest readings, and reservoir storage snapshots for California monitoring stations, including snow water, stream, and reservoir measurements.

Install it as a hosted MCP connection using `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/cdec-ca/mcp`, or run the local bridge with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-cdec-ca`. The npm option forwards requests to the hosted gateway and requires network access.

No, Cdec Ca can make anonymous calls without a key. Anonymous use is capped at 50 calls per day; setting `PIPEWORX_API_KEY` with a Pipeworx account raises the allowance to 200 calls per day.

Call `reservoirs(station_id?)` for reservoir storage or use `latest`, `daily_data`, `hourly_data`, or `event_data` with a station ID and CDEC sensor number. Sensor 15 represents reservoir storage and sensor 3 represents snow water equivalent.

Yes, Cdec Ca works with Cursor through the hosted MCP URL. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/cdec-ca/mcp` as an MCP server, or configure Cursor to run the npm stdio bridge.
